“I agree.” Standing, I help Harper up to her feet. “Come on, let’s get back to the club. Cas is right. There ain’t shit we can do here tonight.”

Luca and Victoria follow us down to the car, and my stomach sinks when I remember the back seat is covered in blood.

Leaving the three of them by the car, I run back into the hospital and swipe a blanket from an abandoned trolley.

Once the seat is covered, it’s decided the girls will sit in the back, and Luca will sit up front as I drive, in case there’s still a Dead Rat lurking. At least the girls will be able to crouch down, and Luca can fight.

In the rearview mirror, I keep a close eye on Harper. She’s so quiet, so still. And while it’s to be expected, it’s still a little unnerving with her.

“Trust Leo to get shot on the night Dad announces there’ll be a vote for him to take over,” Luca chuckles, trying to ease the tension, but it’s not the time.

“I’m sure he didn’t plan it.”

“Not saying he did. Just that no one’s gonna forget this night.”

Victoria sits forward and wraps her arms around his chest over the top of his seat.

Harper continues to stare out of the window as the dark night whizzes by us, and I send up a prayer. He has to make it. He just has to.

Chapter Twenty-One

Luca

Ilook up at the sky, remembering Tor telling me a full moon can affect a person’s behaviour. I don’t need to imagine what was going through the Dead Rat’s mind when he shot my brother. He came here, intent on killing someone, anyone, for the explosion of his club. It’s what we would’ve done in return if the tables were turned. But it was one of us that was hit, and I regret not being outside when the asshole was taken out. I would’ve unloaded my entire clip into him, and then some. Even if he were dead and growing cold, it still wouldn’t have been enough.

Sitting on the front steps to the main house, I light a cigarette and prop my phone up on the step between my feet.

There’s no point in trying to sleep. All I can picture is my brother dying when I close my eyes. The club’s as quiet as a graveyard—it’s never this quiet.

Leo’s blood has been washed away, and the spot by the gates where the prick fell has been erased. You wouldn’t know something went down last night if you weren’t here looking for it.

Half of me wonders if moving to Dog City is the right move. I should stay with my brother and fight by his side. But what if he doesn’t survive? Dad won’t step down, and there’s no way I’d want to leave. Fuck. If he doesn’t pull through, I’ll join him in hell and torture him for all eternity myself.

Angel steps out of the bar and lights a cigarette as he makes his way toward me.

“You can’t sleep either?” he asks.

“Nope.”

“A few brothers are drinking. Sparky’s in the back room with a bottle of tequila.” He takes a long draw on his smoke. “It never fucking stops, does it?”

“Doesn’t seem so,” I reply.

He moves to sit next to me on the step, and I shuffle over to make more room.

“Congrats on the patch, by the way. I didn’t get a chance to say it last night.”

“Thanks. It feels kinda heavy tonight,” I admit.

“It would. Your brother might die.”

“Fuck, brother. Wanna make it any clearer?”

“It’s the truth. I don’t want him to, obviously, but if you lose him, nothing changes regarding Dog City. However, I don’t think he’s going anywhere. He’s strong, and it’s not his time.”

“You psychic now?”

“Nah. Rudi said for him to have made it to the hospital and survive them going in, his chances are better than not.”
