I’ll admit, it makes me feel marginally better hearing that.

“When I make the move to the city, I’m gonna need a VP. You’re the only one I don’t mind being around for any length of time, and I trust you’d tell me how it is.” He’s proven it already, going by this conversation so far. “I’d fight anyone with you having my back. What do you say?”

He lets out a sharp, slow whistle, but the growing smile spreading across his face tells me he’s in.

“Didn’t think I’d make such a station when moving here, but fuck yeah. Someone’s gotta watch your back. You know I’m the one who always takes down more fuckers than you.”

“Yeah, yeah. Whatever.” I sigh. “Will you need to talk it over with Rudi?”

“I don’t think it’ll be too hard to convince her. There are two hospitals in Dog City, so she’ll be able to do the job she’s trained for. I’m pretty sure she’ll be on board.”

“And if she’s not?”

“Then I have ways of changing her mind.”

At his cocky smirk, I shake my head, not needing to know the details.

“It’s gonna be hard work when we first get there. We have the Dog’s Blood boys on the side, but accepting guys we trust could be trickier than we expect.”

“We’ve got this, no doubt about it. Besides, you don’t trust anyone, and that’s why you’ve got me to help you out.”

Flicking my cigarette butt across the gravel, I roll my eyes.

“Are you ready for the patch? I mean, I think you are, but how you feeling about it?”

“I’ll admit, it scared me at first when my dad put it to me, but now I see it, and I’m looking forward to it.”

“Was it true when you said Victoria is up for it?”

“Yeah. She knows she can come home whenever she likes.”

“And if she doesn’t like it at all?”

“Then I have my ways of changing her mind,” I drawl, throwing his words back at him.

“Is that right? Maybe you should come inside and show me these ways.”

We both look over our shoulders to see Tor standing on the doorstep, clearly having heard me.

Grabbing my phone, I say goodnight to a laughing Angel and close the door behind me as Tor makes her way up the stairs.

Watching her climb in under the sheets, I undress, leaving my shit at the bottom of the bed before sliding in next to her.

“What were you talking about with Angel?”

“He wanted to know what would happen if you didn’t like living in the city.”

“And you have ways of changing my mind, huh?”

“It was just something he said I threw it back at him. It’s going to be different for us both, but we’ve got each other. And I swear, I’ll do everything I can to make it easy for you.”

“Hey, I know you will. As long as I’ve got you, I don’t care where we are.”

Kissing her lips, I pull back and say, “It might not happen if Leo doesn’t pull through.”

“He will. I don’t know how I know, but I do. He’s going to be fine. You’ll run the city charter, and he’s going to take over here. He wouldn’t leave Rayna with no parents. He’ll fight.”

Somehow, when she says it, it’s easier to believe.
