“I won’t be away long…” I frown. “At least, I don’t think I will.”

“Myles, Angel, and I are going to follow to make sure you get there safely.”

Reaching out, I grab his hand and press a kiss to his knuckles.

“You’re a good friend to me, Mase. Thank you.”

Not moving his hand from mine, he crouches down to look me in the eye.

“Anytime. I just want you to be happy again.”

“Can you do something for me?” I ask, lowering my voice to a whisper.

“Anything.”

“Make sure JJ doesn’t die. Can you keep him away from Cas? He’s death, and I can’t let it spread to him.”

To his credit, he doesn’t seem phased or questions me. Instead, he flips my hand in his and squeezes.

“I won’t let anything happen to him. You have my word.”

When he releases me, I sink into the seat and move away as JJ climbs into the car. I watch Mason as he walks over to his bike to join his brother and the other guy.

“Who is he?” I ask.

“That’s Angel. He patched in from Mercy a while ago.”

Ah, Mercy. I liked spending time there on the mountain. It felt safe, like nothing could touch us there.

“We should go back to Mercy. We were both happy there, weren’t we?”

“We’re happy anywhere, babe.”

Driving through the gates, Jay rests his hand on my thigh, and the farther we get from the club, the easier it is for me to breathe.

“What were you talking to Mason about?”

In the side mirror, I catch Mason riding next to his brother and smile.

“Not much,” is all I say.

With Jay’s window down, and mine half down, I take as much air as I can into my lungs. But I need more. Unclipping my belt, I turn in my seat.

“Babe, what the fuck?” Jay snaps, slowing the car.

“I need air—weneed air, and lots of it.”

Climbing into the back, I lower the window, but before I can get the other one rolled down, the car comes to a stop, and Jay swings open the door and leans in.

“Don’t ever do that again!”

“We need the wind, babe. All the windows need to be down.”

He grips my chin so I can’t look away.

“Then tell me and I’ll fucking stop. I could’ve crashed the car!”

“I’m… sorry.”
