Closing my eyes, I try to sleep, knowing there’s nothing I can do from here.

I hear the door open, and light footsteps cross the room. The sheets are pulled back to reveal my face, and I look up into JJ’s eyes.

“Victoria said you weren’t looking so good.”

“I’m just tired, and everyone keeps talking about Leo. I don’t need to hear everything they think.”

He’s cleaned the blood from his cut, but it’s like I can still see it staining his leather.

“You should’ve said something. I would’ve come back with you.”

I understand he needs to be with his brothers, and the guy who shot Leo needed to be dealt with.

“Go get washed up, and you can rest with me while we wait for news.”

I listen to the water running in the bathroom, and minutes later, he closes the door behind him and shuts off the lamp.

“Are you sure you’re doing okay?” he asks, throwing his towel to the floor.

“I’m trying real hard to stay positive.”

I inch over to make room so he can climb into bed behind me. Snuggling against my back, he splays his hand over my baby bump.

An odd pain flares across my lower stomach, but it’s gone before I can react.

“If you want to go to the hospital, you don’t have to worry about me,” I tell him.

“It’s not like I can do anything there. Cas and Alannah will call us in if needed.”

“Make sure your ringer is on loud. I don’t want to missss…” I hiss, causing Jay to shoot up from the bed.

“What is it?”

“Pain.” I take a few deep breaths as the pain recedes. “He’s been moving a lot tonight. He’s probably just trying to get comfortable the same as me. Besides, it’s too early for him to come.”

I relax into my pillow, praying it’s a one-off, when a warmth hits the top of my thighs. Reaching down between my legs, I feel a wetness coating my fingertips, and I struggle to breathe.

Sitting up, I edge my way to the side of the bed, and Jay is quick to crouch down on the floor in front of me.

“I’m pretty sure my water broke.”

“You just said it was too early. Is something wrong?”

I reach out, for once being the stronger one, and say, “I have no idea, but I think we should get to the hospital. I’ll call our doctor on the way.”

“Okay, yeah, the hospital,” he rambles, crossing the room to throw on a pair of jeans. He’s dressed in less than a minute, only to look lost again.

“It’s a good thing I had nothing else to do but pack and repack my hospital bag during lockdown.”

Another pain shoots across my stomach, taking my breath away. JJ is at my side, squeezing my hands before it fades.

“What do you need?” he pleads.

“Clean underwear, and a pair of yoga pants. Then we should really leave.”

He becomes a blur of movement, searching out what I need, but when I pull down my night shorts, they’re tinged with streaks of blood.

Panic surges through me, but I vaguely remember small traces of blood being normal. It’s hard to remember and not have a full-on panic attack.
