“She called me Dad.”

“It’s only right, really. Now that she’s calling you Dad, I hope she truly feels like she’s a part of the family.”

I walk down to Harper’s room, my chest no longer feeling like it’s strangling every breath I take.

Every decision I make going forward has to make the tightness fade a little bit more.

Victoria and Bonnie are here with Emma and Aspen. Mason and Myles must be with Jay.

“Where’s Luca?” I ask Victoria.

“He went out for a smoke. He should be back soon.”

Leaning over the bed, I kiss the top of Harper’s head before taking the last chair available.

“You look more perky today,” I chuckle.

“I managed to sleep most of the night, and I just heard the bullet moved.”

“It’s just a waiting game now.”

I’m happy enough to sit here, listening to everyone who visits offer their congratulations to Harper and Jay when he returns.

Luca follows shortly after, and he jerks his chin for me to join him in the hall.

“What’s up?”

“I just had Darius on the phone. According to his watchers, Effie’s men are growing by the day, but all they’re doing is watching. They’re not making any moves… yet.”

“It doesn’t surprise me. No doubt she’s feeling a little lost, not knowing how she failed to set us up. Tell Darius to keep watching his back, and you’ll be there within the next few weeks.”

“That soon?”

“If we could make it sooner, then all the better. Shit’s gotta get rolling.”

“Should I be getting Victoria to pack up?”

“It wouldn’t hurt.”

“Fucking hell.”

Instead of joining everyone back in Harper’s room, we go visit Gunner. We’re not allowed in, but we’re content to watch him from the window partition.

“You know, you’re gonna be tied up with the new charter for a long while. There’s no need to give me more grandchildren.”

“A year.”

Frowning, I look at my son.

“A year, what?”

“That’s how long Victoria is making me wait to start our family.”

Fucking hell.

“So if you had your way, she’d be pregnant now?”

“Fuck yeah.”
