Callie grinned. “You hear that, Killer? You and I are going to become besties.”

“Are you telling me you have Buddy in there too?” Josh asked.

“Yep, Jared had a call and brought him by.”

“Don’t let him take advantage of you.”

“It’s no trouble. I love Buddy.” Callie kissed Killer on the head. “Who would have guessed I’d become such a dog lover?”

“Certainly not me,” Jacquie said, remembering how Buddy had scared Callie so badly she fell on Lucy’s cupcake stand while trying to get away from him. “Thanks for this. I really appreciate it.”

“No problem. I’ll see you two later.” She cuddled Killer and took her into her coffee shop where Buddy was sitting in the doorway waiting for them.

Josh stared after her for a moment.

Jacquie smiled. “Not that I have to ask, but how are you two doing?”

Josh got a stupid grin on his face. “I’m going to ask her to marry me.”

That was a surprise. “Already?”

He shrugged. “Hey, when you know, you know. And that lady right there is the best thing that has ever happened to me.”

Jacquie was thrilled for her brother. “I’ve known Callie a long time, and I think you two are perfect for each other. I couldn’t be happier.” Excitement pulsed through her at the thought of her best friend marrying her brother. “So when are you going to do it?”

“When this case is over. I want to take her away for the weekend. Maybe Gatlinburg or Nashville.”

“She would love that. Okay, let’s get me checked out so we can get back to it.”

He laughed. “Okay.” He pulled up in front of the hospital and they went inside. “Can we see Dr. Davis?” he asked once they approached the front desk.

The nurse looked at her computer screen. “He’s with a patient right now.”

“Okay, we’ll be in Sylvia Reynard’s room when he’s free.”

The nurse raised her eyebrows.

“Police business,” Josh said.

She frowned. “Okay.”

They took the elevator up to Sylvia’s room. “Dr. Davis is not going to be happy when he hears what happened.”

“True. But I bet he won’t be surprised.”

Jacquie grinned. “True enough.”

They rounded the corner and saw Ronnie sleeping in his chair. “Would you look at that?” Josh said.

“Good thing Chase isn’t here to see that.”

They stopped in front of the chair. “Ronnie?” Josh said, kicking the chair leg.

The guard didn’t stir

Concerned, Jacquie tipped his hat back. Ronnie was out cold, and blood was trickling from a wound in his head. “Oh, no!”

Josh rushed inside the room while Jacquie turned and ran toward the nurses’ station. “Help. We need help over here.”
