Two nurses on duty ran toward her as she led them toward Ronnie. She opened the door and found Josh kneeling over nurse, Keith, who was lying unconscious on the floor.

She rushed to his side, her heart jumping into her throat as she took in the man’s still form and the room’s disarray. “Is he okay?”

Josh nodded but his face as grim. “In here,” he yelled to one of the nurses.

The woman hurried through the door. “Oh, no. Keith, can you hear me?” she said as she kneeled next to him and lifted his hand, checking his wrist for his pulse.

At that moment Dr. Davis walked through the door. “What is going on here?”

“Looks like our guard and your nurse have been attacked,” Jacquie said. “Is he going to be okay?” she asked, as Keith started to stir.

“Yes,” the nurse answered.

“Sylvia!” Jacquie ran toward her friend lying in the bed and breathed a sigh of relief when she found Sylvia still breathing, and her monitors looked to be in order.

Josh took out his phone and called for backup. “Keith must have surprised whoever was in here.”

Keith tried to sit up. He groaned, and grabbed his head.

“Stay still,” Dr. Davis demanded. He shone a light in his eyes, checking his pupils.

“I’m okay,” Keith insisted as he tested out his arms and legs, seeing that they still worked. “I can’t believe that skinny guy got the better of me.”

“What happened?” Josh asked.

“Sylvia’s alarm was going off. I walked in to find two men fighting. The skinny one hit me. I’m afraid I fell like a sack of potatoes.” He shook his head. “I obviously need to get back to the gym.”

“What did they look like?” Jacquie asked.

“I don’t know who the guy was that hit me, but the other guy was Aiden McKenzie.”

“Are you sure?” Josh asked.

“Yep. Went to school with him.”

“Do you know what they were fighting about?” Jacquie asked.

“No. Didn’t care.”

“This doesn’t make any sense,” Jacquie muttered.

“You’ve got a mild concussion, but you’ll be okay,” the doctor said, finishing his examination.

“What about the guard outside?”

“He’s coming to,” a nurse said, stepping into the doorway.

The doctor shook his head and walked out into the hall to examine Ronnie.

“What do you think?” Jacquie asked Josh.

“I think they came here to finish off Sylvia.”

They both turned to look at the woman in the hospital bed. Still breathing.

Jacquie’s eyebrows rose. “Then who stopped them?”

“If they were fighting, I’d guess Aiden,” Josh said.
