“Rosa filled your food bowls before leaving at three. So don’t complain. You can’t already be hungry.”

Regardless, she gave them food and water and allowed them to play outside as she fixed herself a salad and a cup of herbal tea.

“Okay, guys, we’re all done with dinner. Come on inside with me.”

She let them in, locked the backyard door, and climbed to the second floor, the animals accompanying her to her room.

“You can wait here while I shower.”

Max’s strong barking surprised her when she’d just finished rinsing the shampoo out of her hair. She dried herself and slipped on the casual pjs she’d brought.

Something was seriously annoying the dog. He ran toward her then toward the room’s closed door.

“You wanna go out?”

She opened the door, and he bounced outside, spun toward her again and barked.

Something was wrong. Her heart plummeted at the sound of footsteps coming from the kitchen.
