“Of course not. Jocelyn remembered me from your wedding day. She claimed that you gave her your card yesterday and promised you could do any surgery she wanted. Basically she wants you to make her look like your ex.”

“Wha-at?”

“I told her that we have a procedure for signing up for surgery, and that no one on earth can get away without following it. She ended up filling out all the forms I sent her. I informed her we’d study her case and decide which doctor would be available to take care of her. Besides, facelifts are handled by Dr. Nora Herbert.”

“Did you tell her that any surgery or procedure not related to an accident or sickness is not covered by insurance?”

“Of course. I added that full payment is due prior to surgery. I sent her a price list.”

“And?”

“She said she’s not worried about the payment. Dr. Winston would probably do itpro-bono.”

“Seriously? As if I have time to waste pulling on her skin.”

“Don’t worry. I told her that the bills were handled by our finance company, not by our doctors.”

“Thank you, Heidi.” He patted her hand. “I don’t know what we’d do without you.” He pushed his chair away from the table. “Back to work.”

“You have a few patients in the waiting room ready for examination.”

“Thanks for the muffins.”

By eight o’clock, he texted Royce to order something for dinner and drove home. A text from Brenda surprised him.

FYI: Jocelyn J. called me. She wanted your phone number. I told her I didn’t have it.

He thumbed.

Thanks. Going home. Too tired to talk. See you tomorrow.

Fighting to keep his eyes open, he switched on the radio as loud as possible and opened the window to get some fresh air.

Luckily, he reached home safe and sound.

“Dinner’s ready,” Royce announced. “I ordered fajitas.”

“It smells delicious. Thanks, bud.”

He helped himself to the food and ate like a starving man.

His brother was used to his post-shift nights and didn’t bother him with useless chatter.

“Night, Royce. By the way, I’m having Brenda over for dinner tomorrow.”

“Ah, great.” Royce chuckled. “By the way, who’s Brenda?”

“A former classmate I met at the reunion. We’ve reconnected.”

“Perfect. Glad you had a good time.” Royce grinned. “I’ll vacate the place tomorrow night.”

“What? No, on the contrary. I need you here. Her sixteen-year-old daughter is coming too and wants to meet you.”

“Come on, man. You’re going too far.” Royce banged on the table.

The sound wreaked havoc in Matt’s brain. “Quiet, for the love of God.” He cradled his head.

“Me and a sixteen year old? I may be a black sheep, but I’m not that depraved.”
