“Royce, I’m too tired to explain. We count on you to talk some sense into the girl. She’s driving her mother crazy.”

“I’m not a teacher or a shrink.” He shrugged, and then a wily smile twisted his lips. “But of course, if the girl’s an obstacle to dating the lovely mom, I’ll do my best. In that case, I’ll invite Susan Chen. Her Ph.D. thesis includes a project about reforming difficult kids.”

Matt shrugged. “Invite whoever you want. It’s not like I’m having a romantic dinner.”

“You’re a hopeless case, brother. Bringing the daughter with you on your first dinner out.” Royce snickered. “And here I thought you’d finally got yourself a date.”

“Night, Royce.”

Unable to cope with another sound, Matt dragged himself to his room, gently closed the door behind him before shedding his scrubs, and sprawled on his bed for a well-deserve sleep.

In the morning, the heavenly smell of brewing coffee prompted Matt to get out of bed and make his way to the kitchen.

“Feeling better today?”

Sitting at the kitchen table, Royce glanced at him. A laptop, tablet, notepad and two books, attested to Royce’s deep attention to his work.

“D’you realize you broke a record by waking up after me? Help yourself to bagels, cheese, and other spreads in the fridge.”

By tacit arrangement, Royce handled the food and maintenance in their condo, claiming it was his way of paying rent—not that Matt had ever asked him for a penny.

“Thanks. How’s the studying coming?”

“Slowly but surely. Pushing for two master’s degrees at a time isn’t an easy task, but I promised Dad I’d make up for the past. Hopefully, I’ll invite him to a graduation next year.”

Matt raised his phone and snapped a picture. “I’ll send it to Dad to show him his money is being put to good use this time.”

“It’d be put to better use if you stopped distracting me,” Royce said without raising his eyes from his laptop. “By the way, Susan suggested dinner on the building’s poolside terrace. She’s bringing a vegetable casserole, her special noodles, and a dessert. You’re expected to buy a tenderloin or some filet mignons to barbeque.”

“Great idea. I’ll be on my way.”

“Tell your guests to bring their bathing suits. We may take a dip after dinner.”

Bathing suits?

A picture of Mia’s skimpy bikini popped into Matt’s mind. This might not be a good idea. Would the barbeque around the pool mark the beginning of a new chapter for Brenda and him, or would it end their new relationship as quickly as their infamous first kiss had?
