Brenda laughed. “Poor Royce, I’ll cook his favorite dishes next week.”

“Anytime you want. Make yourself at home in this condo.”

She did, cooking, baking, preparing romantic dinners on the balcony, enjoying erotic soaks in his spa tub, sleeping in Matt’s arms every night. Between work during the day and spending time with Matt in the evening, the week whizzed by at an incredible speed.

He spent the next week at her house, but the week after, they split, each one in his own place, tackling an enormous work load work to accommodate their upcoming vacation.

In addition, Brenda took advantage of her lonely nights to browse through the camp website for Mia’s pictures. Attuned to her daughter’s habits, Brenda guessed her daughter’s mood through her emails—long reports when she had interesting news to share, or hardly a two-liner when she was too busy to chat with her mom. The longest emails humorously described each friend in detail, good and bad. Laughing often as she read, Brenda concluded her daughter was a gifted writer, taking after her father.

One of her new friends was a classmate from her high-school.

Emily’s getting on my nerves. Too curious. Too annoying.

And that was all for that email. Two days later, a longer missive reassured Brenda.

Things are getting better. Emily is dropping her high-and-mighty school attitude. Funny. She’s the one making an effort to be accepted.

Mia went on to say that Emily was doing her best to become her friend, and she was going to give her a chance.

Brenda sighed, hoping camp remained a happy haven for Mia.

On Friday, Matt was on-call. In the early morning, he shoved his carry-on into the back of her SUV. He left his car in her garage, and she dropped him at the clinic before heading to her office. After work, she used her free time to pack for their vacation—three short nightgowns, three fancy beach dresses, and three bikinis, all sexy and new, and chosen with Matt’s taste in mind. The rest of her clothes didn’t take time to add.

The next day, after she’d pampered herself with a long shower, she let her curled hair flow down over her shoulders. She donned black pants, a yellow blouse, and plopped a jaunty, straw hat on her head. Glancing in the mirror, she gave herself a thumbs-up, slipped her beach bag over her shoulder, and put on her new sunglasses.

At ten o’clock, she was waiting for Matt in front of the clinic. He arrived fifteen minutes later, a thermos of coffee in hand.

“Sorry to have kept you waiting. Too many questions at the last minute.”

“No problem. Relax and try to sleep.”

“All right. Wake me up when we get there.”

He closed his eyes for five minutes, and then opened one to glance at her.

“You look cute in that hat.”

“Thanks.”

He sipped his coffee and asked about her day.

By the time she parked in the long-term parking lot, he was wide-awake. Dragging their carry-ons, they checked in and got their boarding passes.

“We’re keeping our luggage with us to save time upon arrival.”

They lined up for their security checks and finally sprinted to the gate.

“Did you have breakfast?” he asked.

“A muffin with my coffee. You?”

“Nothing before my coffee in the car. But now that we have more than an hour before boarding, I wouldn’t mind eating something.”

They settled in the food court and ordered pizza and soft drinks.

As usual Matt was starved.

“You really should make an effort to eat at regular times.”
