When she did, he moved behind her, pushed her hair to one side, and kissed her nape.

“Don’t open them yet.” He tied the clasp on the necklace he’d bought her at the resort jewelry store.

“Now, walk.” He led her over to the mirror. “Open your eyes.”

“Oh my God, how pretty.” She fingered the mother-of-pearl necklace with large beads set in a silver mounting.

“Happy birthday, babe.”

“How did you know?”

“I saw your ID. I wanted you to have a souvenir from the resort. Something to remind you of our time together.”

“It’s so beautiful. Thank you, Matt.” She threw her arms around his neck, kissing him so passionately that he was tempted to forget about dinner, but it was their last night in Miami, and he wanted it to be special.

“We’ll make your birthday memorable.”

They toasted her birthday, and the dinner proved to be delicious. Back at the resort, they stopped by the discotheque for an after-dinner drink and danced for two hours. Although he wasn’t a sentimental man, holding her against him and moving to the sound of romantic songs would remain etched in his memory forever.

“Happy birthday, again,” he repeated against her hair.

“Oh, Matt, you’re amazing.”

Their sandals in hand, they continued their night with a barefoot stroll along the beach, listening to the gentle waves unfurling on the shore, digging their toes into the sand or padding into the water. He rolled up his pant legs to the knees.

She laughed when the hem of her skirt caught a wave and plastered itself to her thigh.

He squeezed her arm. “Guess what I feel like doing now?”

“Swim in the moonlight?”

“Exactly.”

They were so attuned to each other’s mood.

“Easy.” She laughed and wriggled out of her dress, carefully rolling it up and setting it on the dry sand.

“Is this bikini good enough?”

“Fabulous.”

Her white lace bikini glistening in the moon’s glow hardened every one of his muscles. He shed his pants and button-down shirt, rolled them and set them next to hers. He kept his trunks on and said, “Wait.”

He held her hand, and they padded into the ocean until the water reached her knees. “Come out and take your undies off. No need to get them wet. I’ll put them with our clothes.”

With his arms around her, he supported and hid her from the beach, already deserted at that time of the night. Leaning on him, she slipped off her bikini and handed it to him, walking into the deep.

“My bra now.”

“Let me.” He unclasped her bra and trailed kisses on her back. “Wait here. I’ll be back with you in a sec.” He ran to the beach and folded the two pieces inside her dress.

Matt kept Brenda’s hand in his as they sauntered deeper into the ocean, the gentle waves bursting against their naked chests. They idled, content to be alone.

Jerking her hand free, she paused. “You go ahead. I like to enter the water slowly.”

He let her go and dived, crawling under water to cool his overheated mind and body. When he surfaced again, she was floating on her back, hair splayed around her face. A perfect figure exposed to his hungry eyes. The moonlight streamed silver rays onto her tanned skin. Heat unfurled in his belly. He took a step back and wrapped his arm around her back.

“Come in deeper. The water is great.”
