“Yes. Do you think Cody will hate me?”

“If he truly loves you, then he’ll love you more.”

She sighed. “How are the other kids?”

“They have various injuries. They’ll get better with time. By the way, Royce called. When Cody failed to reach you last night and today, he contacted Susan to find out what happened to you.”

“He did?” She smiled, grimaced in pain, and cried, “It hurts.”

“Okay, don’t smile. Your boyfriend is on his way.”

“Mom, can I have a mirror?”

Brenda glanced at him. “I don’t have one.”

“Marly, can you get us a mirror? A magnifying one if possible?”

“Give me a minute.” The young nurse left and returned with a round, magnifying mirror. “I borrowed it from the nurses’ room.” She held it up so that Mia could look at herself.

“Thank you. Mia, right now your face is covered with bandages.”

Mia looked intensely at the mirror. “The bandages are scary, like in a horror movie.” She chuckled and winced. “Ouch, I shouldn’t laugh. I don’t see anything broken. Can you keep the bandages on for two months?”

Matt laughed. “That’s my girl. Great idea.”

Suddenly, Matt realized he’d been ignoring the other man in the room, the father who’d rushed here to be with his daughter. Maybe Matt shouldn’t be this familiar with Mia. She didn’t need a substitute father when the real one was around and might resent Matt for replacing him.

Reverting to his doctor persona, he studied the numbers on the monitor. “Your heartbeat and pulse are almost back to normal. You need patience and perseverance, and of course a lot of rest.”

“How long will she stay in the hospital?” Brenda asked.

“I’ll keep her for a week or two, until we are sure her lungs are on the mend.”

A knock on the door alerted them to a new visitor.
