The detective didn’t look fazed. “I’m questioning everyone involved. Can we have the test repeated now?”

“Absolutely. Marly, call the floor attending and tell him Detective Robertson wants the drug tests done on new samples collected now from the four accident victims.”

“Thank you, Dr. Winston. No offense meant. Just doing my duty.”

Matt glared at him without answering.

“I’ll talk to Mia now. Can you remember when you and Emily chatted about who would be doing the driving to the party?”

“We were coming out of English class when I announced I was going to the party and my mom would drive me. The next day after Math, Emily asked me if we could give her and her brother a ride. Her mother would bring us back. I said my mom would be happy to drive us both ways. But she said her mother insisted on doing her part. That’s what I told Mom. And I told her she could go to the ballet and not worry about me. She made me promise I would text her if I wanted to come back earlier.”

“I saw your texts. Why did you want to leave earlier, Mia?”

Matt, Brenda, and Tyron came closer to the bed not wanting to miss Mia’s barely audible voice.

“After I was elected homecoming queen, I was so happy. Everyone congratulated me. We danced, then Nick took my hand and walked me behind the food bar and tried to kiss me. I said, ‘No, I have a boyfriend.’ He tried to argue. I pushed him and ran back to the group.”

The detective kept his phone close to her head and recorded the conversation. “Did he try again?” the detective prompted.

Mia held his gaze and continued, “Two more times. I pushed him and called Mom and texted her. Then I told Emily to ask her mother to come and get us earlier. She shrugged. People started leaving. I saw Emily’s young brother leaving with a friend. Emily said she’d sent him home with his friend’s parents as her mother wasn’t coming. Nick would drive us back.”

“What did you say?”

“I texted Mom again. Nick came to me. He apologized for bugging me and gave me a pill to put me in a better mood. I yelled at him that I wasn’t taking drugs. When the stadium was almost empty, Emily said they were leaving. If I stayed, I’d be staying alone. I texted Mom for the third time.”

“I’m so sorry, baby.” Brenda’s tears rolled down her cheeks.

“It’s okay, Mom. Not your fault.”

“Did you go with your friends?” Detective Robertson asked.

“Yes. I followed them. Emily and Tom sat in the back.”

“Did they put their seatbelt on?”

“Emily buckled up. Not sure about Tom. I sat in the front seat and asked Nick to put on his seatbelt. He told me to stop being a sour-puss. And then Tom told him to give me something to relax me.”

“What did he give you?”

“First the same pill and then a small bag with white powder. He said to drink it with a coke. ‘It’ll help you relax and we’ll all have fun, right guys?’ They all laughed.”

“You said no?”

“I said okay. I took the pill, the bag, and the coke, and said, ‘Okay let’s go. Please drive me home.’ They all laughed and said, ‘Good girl.’ And Nick took off finally.”

“Did you swallow the drugs?” Brenda asked in a wobbling voice.

“No, Mom. I sipped some coke. They were busy, Emily and Tom making out in the back and Nick driving. I slipped the pill and bag into my purse.”

Brenda sighed. Tyron smiled proudly. Matt suppressed a chuckle, then frowned as he studied the monitor.

“Smart girl,” the detective said.

“Detective Robertson, her BP has gone up. I don’t like it.”

“We can stop and resume tomorrow.”

“No, there won’t be any more interrogation. I’m putting her to sleep and letting her rest.”
