Chapter Nineteen

Her heart heavy, Brenda waved at the car speeding away. She’d always known Tyron would leave once Mia felt better, and she hadn’t tried to stop him. She’d finally understood that he’d offered all he could ever offer, his unwavering friendship and deep affection. Unfortunately, his presence had pushed Matt away.

Squaring her shoulders, she walked back into the house, scolding herself. A love that couldn’t stand the test of time was no true love. Matt had enjoyed dating her until the accident. Maybe her constant concern for Mia and Tyron’s presence had frustrated him. Always a conscientious doctor, he did his best for Mia and unloaded the burden of comforting Brenda unto Tyron.

As if she needed either man in her life. She’d lived ten fulfilling years on her own and would continue to do so. Her demanding job and her care for Mia filled her cup to the brim. Why load herself down with a man and his troubles?

“Mia, baby, do you want a glass of juice?” she asked her daughter who lounged on the living room sofa typing homework on her tablet.

“No, Mom. Thanks. Stop worrying about me. If I want something, I’ll get it.”

With a sigh, Brenda returned to the kitchen.

The doorbell stopped her in her tracks. Had Tyron forgotten something?

“Coming.” She rushed to open the door and gasped. “Matt? What are you doing here?”

He stepped in and kicked the door shut behind him. His gaze intense, he peered at her silently. “How are you doing, Brenda?”

“I’m doing well.” She tipped her chin up. “Mia is improving a lot, and Tyron left a few minutes ago.”

“I heard he was leaving.”

“Ah, and that’s why you’re showing up now? To see if we’re collapsing on our own, if we need help?”

He didn’t answer and walked into the living room. “Hi, Mia. How are you feeling?”

“Hi, Dr. Matt. Long time no see.”

The girl stood, took a few steps toward him, and hugged him. “I’m doing great. Walking on my own. Studying. Doing my PT daily.”

“Good girl. Any problems?”

“Just the annoying gauze around my nose and jaw. Other than that, no complaints.”

“Soon, we’ll get you into surgery. Not too bored at home?”

She tilted her head and smiled. “Nope. Cody comes to study with me every day from three to four. The highlight of my life.”

“Great. Can you do me a favor and vacate the place? I need to talk to your mom, privately.”

Brenda snapped, “We have nothing private to discuss.”

“Ah, it’s about time you remember her, Dr. Matt.”

He chuckled. “The accident hasn’t diminished your cheek.”

“Make it worth your while, Dr. Matt.” She laughed and padded to her room.

“I said we have nothing to talk about,” Brenda protested.

“You don’t.” He grabbed her shoulders, holding her at arm’s length. “But I have to apologize for being jealous of Tyron…”

Her eyes rounded. “Of Tyron?”

“For believing he wanted you back in his life as a loving partner…”

Her jaw sagged. “Ah, I never said—”
