“Too late to say anything now. Not after I’ve spent five weeks festering with jealousy, torn between my love for you and my compassion for Mia. In my desperate mind, I believed the poor girl needed a loving family with her mom and dad living together.”

“Matt, I never thought… I mean I thought you’ve had it with my…”

“I’d had it with you going home with another man, keeping another man in your house, in your room, in your bed—”

“No, no, never in my room, never in my bed. In the guestroom. He’s Mia’s father. A friend, but not…”

“How was I supposed to guess, Brenda? I went crazy for five weeks, hating him, missing you.”

He brought her against his chest and crushed her mouth with a blazing kiss.

She returned his kisses with all her pent-up passion.

“I love you, Brenda. You’re my one and only love.” His warm lips trailed over her throat to her ear. “The woman I want by my side forever.”

“I’m sorry, Matt.” She cradled his cheeks in her palms. “I should have explained the truth long ago. I couldn’t.” She sighed still overwhelmed by the enormity of the situation. “He’s gay, but I had his child. What does that make me? I buried my feelings and couldn’t talk about it. I never thought you’d be offended and distance yourself. How did you guess?”

“I didn’t guess anything. Tyron came to talk to me.”

“He did? Oh my God.”

“Don’t blame him. He wants your happiness. We had an open and frank conversation.”

“Tyron has always done his best to protect me. I don’t need protection. I’m strong enough to protect myself and my daughter.”

“I want to love you, Brenda. Will you love me?”

“Yes, I will. I do love you, Matt.”

“Will you marry me, sweetheart?”

“Yes. Yes, I will.”

“Let’s do it the right way. Wait a minute, don’t move. Mia,” he called loudly. “Mia, can you come into the living room?”

“You’re going to tell her?”

“Sure.”

“What’s up?” Mia padded in, her hands on her hips. “Mia, get lost. Mia, come back. Make up your mind, Dr. Matt.”

“We should wash her mouth with soap. She’s not too old for that. Mia, you said to make it worth my while. Can you keep quiet for a second?”

He shoved his hand into his pocket and dug out a velvet pouch. Untying the strings, he brought out a solitaire ring and dropped onto one knee.

“Oh my God,” Brenda whispered.

“Way to go, Dr. Matt.”

“Brenda, my love, will you marry me?”

“Yes, yes. I will,” she repeated.

He slid the solitaire onto her finger, stood, and pulled her into his arm.

Happier than she’d ever expected to be, she received her first engagement kiss, a deep kiss she returned eagerly.

“Congratulations, Mom. I told you to grab him long ago. Thank you, Dr. Matt. You’re the best.”
