“You go with them,” Leo murmured. “Rafael and I will wait for you.”

She met with the doctor, explained the cases, and requested X-rays for the girl. The doctor examined the mother and ordered a scan to confirm the hemorrhage.

Arianna stayed next to Rodney who seemed lost. She assumed he might have a concussion, or was too stressed by the accident. She spoke to him. The man started crying, accusing himself of harming and maybe killing his wife and daughter. He wasn’t in any pain, but was too shaky to stand on his feet.

“Katy was driving because I hadn’t slept all night, working on a project. She was afraid I wouldn’t be alert. Now, she’s the one injured instead of me.”

To be on the safe side, Arianna asked the doctor to examine Rodney. “He’s stressed and confused. Should we check for a concussion?”

“Absolutely right. I’ll order a C-scan on the head.” He called his nurse and wrote his request. “Now, we’ll put the girl’s arm in a cast. She doesn’t have other injuries. You cleaned her facial cuts.”

“What about her mother?”

“She’s being prepped for surgery. The scan showed internal hemorrhage in the abdominal cavity. The surgeon will sew up some of her cuts. You did a good job, nurse. Are you new?”

“Yes, today was my first day.”

“Well, good luck. You did very well for a first day. I’m Dr. James Vermont.” He gave her his card. “If you need anything…”

“Thank you. I’m Arianna Garcia. I’m working with SAMF as of today. Bye, doctor.” She called Rafael to tell him she was ready to go back. She met them on the roof.

“You did an A+ job, kiddo.” Leo squeezed her shoulder.

“Let’s get back to the base.” Rafael said without any congratulatory comments.

Disappointed, she climbed into the copter and buckled in.

A moment later, they exited on the helipad and walked together to the SAMF building.

“Arianna, you must report to Barbara now.”

“I know.” He didn’t have to remind her of her duties.

“Coming with you.”

Annoyed, she spun toward him, huffed, and kept walking by his side to her boss’s office.

Barbara greeted them with a broad smile. “How did it go?”

“Can I have a first day evaluation form?” Rafael said, his voice as blank as his gaze.

“Here.” Barbara’s smile faded, and she tossed Arianna a questioning glance.

Arianna shrugged, her jaws clenched, but she lifted her chin. “I enjoyed the experience and took good care of my patients and—”

“What was the problem?” Barbara frowned.

“No problem at all. I handled the two victims, the mother and daughter, exactly as I was supposed to.” She detailed her actions to her boss who glanced at Rafael, puzzled.

“Here’s the evaluation.” He handed it to Barbara.

“Oh dear… Ah… huh…wonderful.” Her stern expression morphed into a happy grin.

It was Arianna’s turn to frown. “If he’s not pleased—”

“Captain Lopez gave you anexcellentrating on the twelve assessment questions. So he must be very pleased, right Captain Lopez?”

“Did I say anything different?” he said, his tone pleasant.
