My impression, too. I’ll take it. How are you feeling?

Good. No problems.

By one o’clock, the agent stopped by her office where Tyler signed the lease to move into his new place next weekend.

“If you can drop me at the bank, I’ll give you the required deposit and first month’s rent right away.”

At the bank, he transferred the amount left in the joint account to his checking account, closed the joint account, and wrote a check for the agent.

“Congratulations, Dr. Kent.” They shook hands. “The apartment is empty now. You can have your furniture delivered any time.”

Tyler had one last errand to run. “If the mall is on your way, I would appreciate a ride.”

“No problem.”

At the mall, Tyler went to the jewelry store where he’d purchased Beverly’s engagement ring, the one he was supposed to have given her on their wedding day. She’d chosen the three-carat diamond ring herself—a little bauble valued at a fortune he’d agreed to pay for in three installments. With all the commotion, he’d forgotten it in the pocket of his suit jacket. It was time to return it.

The jeweler couldn’t hide his disappointment and commiserated over the broken engagement. With the price of the ring back in his account, Tyler sighed in relief and scolded himself once more for his naïveté.

Satisfied with today’s business and the choices he’d made, he had one unpleasant task left. He dialed Beverly’s number.

“Tyler,” she squealed. “It took you long enough to call me. When will I see you?”

“Soon. We need to talk.”

“I’ll be home, waiting for you.”

“No, let’s go out. How about the French Bistro tonight?” He knew it was her favorite place.

“Sure. You know I love it there, Baby Boo.”

He suppressed a snort. She might hate it after this.

“Is five p.m. okay?”

“That early?” He could almost see her pout.

“I’m on call tomorrow morning.”

“Ah, how could I forget?” Her voice was laced with sarcasm. “Fine, pick me up at five. I’ll be ready.”

“I don’t have my car. I’ll meet you at the restaurant at five. Goodbye.” He tapped the red icon to end the call.

As expected, she called back.

With a sigh, he answered, “Yes?”

“Why don’t you have your car?”

“Because I’m downtown. I had errands to run and someone dropped me off. It’ll be early, and the restaurant has a parking lot. I’ll ask the owner to reserve a spot for you. If you don’t want to come, we can cancel.”

“No. That’s fine, Baby Boo. See you soon.” Her giggle grated on his nerves.

He hated hurting people, and he would be hurting her tonight. How would she react?

He found a fast-food restaurant, ordered lunch and coffee, and after sitting down to eat, texted Sienna.

How are you feeling now?
