The jerk! He’d thrown the ball into her lap, coming out of the discussion as the generous, loving suitor.

Dean Tristan smiled broadly. “You don’t find many men this courteous nowadays. But he’s his father’s son. Young man, I’m glad you appreciate what a true gem your lovely fiancée is. I’m sincerely happy for both of you.”

“Thank you sir. My fiancée is one of a kind. Mrs. Chen, I hope you know that I would do anything to make Susan happy.”

Dinner lasted longer than Susan expected with Royce asking for a second of Mae’s delicious curry and Dean Tristan following suit. When they finally swallowed their last bites, Mae tapped her fingers on the table. “Susan, bring the bowl of Thai mango sticky rice. Wait, Royce. The small bowls are on the buffet, pass them on please.”

Despite her frustration, Susan felt a surge of nervous laugher at the way Mae had managed to keep Royce away from her. Always the perfect hostess, her mother served the succulent dessert, accepting the compliments without a smile.

Once the men finished a second portion, Mae yawned. “I’m getting sleepy. Gentlemen, you’ll have to excuse us. ”

“Of course, I’ll let you rest.” Dean Tristan stood. “Thank you, Carol, for a delicious dinner. I’ll call you tomorrow.” He kissed Mae on the cheek. “Good night Susan, Royce.”

Mae walked him to the door.

“You, too, can leave, Royce.” Susan crossed her arms.

“I meant every word I said. I love you, and I’m ready to marry you tomorrow, Susan.”

“Easy to say when you know I can’t, and when I know it won’t stop your philandering.”

“I swear there was no kissing, no cheating, no betraying of my word to you. I don’t know what else to say or do to convince you. You’re the only woman in my life and my heart. Think about it.”

“Seriously?” Mae’s voice resonated like a gong in the living room. “Can you explain what’s going on here, Susan? Did you break your engagement to Kasem?”

“Good night, Mrs. Chen, Susan. Call me when you decide to believe me.”

“Goodnight. It seems that Susan and I have a lot to discuss.”

On that stern note, Royce headed to the door and left.

“Well, Susan?”

“You heard everything. What more can I say?”

“Do you believe him?”

“I don’t know, Mae. Every time I believe him and fall into his arms, something happens to disappoint me.”

“Either he doesn’t prove his love the right way, or you don’t trust him enough.”

Susan’s heart sank. Should she wait until he proved his love to her? Or should she trust him more?
