“Because… Because I wasted my life not knowing what real love was.”

“Ah, you scared the hell out of me. Don’t worry, love, we’ll make up.” A smug grin stretched his lips. “So you enjoyed it?”

“Yes. Oh yes. I never thought it could be so amazing. I want to make love every day.”

“My pleasure, babe.” He gave her a scorching kiss, she returned passionately.

“Let’s get married right away, Royce.”

“Easy, babe. I want to marry you and keep you forever. But I’ll do it the right way. First I want you to trust me, even if appearances work against me.” He rolled, moving her on top of him. “Second, would you like to spend the weekend with me?”

“The weekend? And go where?”

“Here. We’ll picnic in this house and emerge to real life on Sunday night.”

“Two days in this mansion, in your arms? I would love that.”

“Great. It’s only nine thirty. Opera won’t end until ten at least. I’ll take you home to pack a few things while I feed the animals and get them settled for the night. You leave a note to your mother with whatever explanation you want. I’ll text Kasem that I’m going on a business trip.”

“All right.” She slid out of bed and got dressed while he stopped by the bathroom.

A few minutes later, they were on their way to her house. He opened her garage door, drove inside, and shut it behind them.

“Get a bathing suit. We’ll use the spa and maybe the heated pool.”

“Give me two minutes.”

She packed the necessary clothes for two days with Royce, changed into a brown sweat suit with a yellow blouse, and wrote a note to her mother.

Hi Mae,

I hope you had a great time at the opera with Dean Tristan. I’m going on a weekend trip with a friend, not far from Cincinnati. I’m taking my car and will be back late Sunday night. You can call me in case of an emergency.

Love you,

Susan

“I’m ready, Royce,” she called after filling a cooler with food from the freezer.

“Ready, too. The animals are fed and in for the night. What’s the cooler for?”

“Mae cooked and froze a lot of food. She’ll be delighted I took some for my picnic.”

“Okay.” He grabbed the cooler and her carryon. “You changed. No more sexy mini-dress and boots.”

“It’s more comfy.”

“Now, we’ll stop by my building so I can grab some clothes and my car.”

“No, we’ll keep my SUV. This way no one will suspect that I’m with you. What if Kasem asks questions when you stop by?”

“I doubt he’ll be home. Too early for him. Anyhow, we’ll go to the garage and check to see if his car is there.”

Royce drove to his building, entered the garage and took a tour. “He’s not here. I’ll go out and park in a side street. Wait for me. I’ll run in and out.”

He stopped her SUV two streets away and asked her to lock the doors.

He returned a few minutes later, a backpack on his back. “Let’s start our weekend, babe.” He started the SUV and drove away. At the end of the street, Susan jerked, and lowered her head to her knees. “Kasem’s car coming toward us.”
