She closed her laptop, gathered several folders, and pointed to her briefcase. “Put them in there.”

Her handbag strapped to her shoulder, briefcase in hand, she switched off the light. “Sorry, I have to leave you in the dark.”

“No problem.”

“Lock it when you leave.”

A few minutes later, she called him. “The corridor is clear. Get out, lock the door, and turn left. Go to the end of the hall. I’m at the entrance to the stairs. We won’t take the elevator.”

“Coming.” In less than a minute, he joined her in the stairs, took her briefcase, and ran down the stairs with her. “I parked in the next street.”

They settled into his car, and he drove off. “Unfortunately, I don’t think I’ll visit again.”

“Too bad.”

“On Saturday, we’re still on for dinner with Matt and Brenda, right?”

Susan nodded. “Right. I told Mae I couldn’t wait to meet their baby.”

“I’ll pick you up at a quarter to five.” For once, they wouldn’t have to hide.

“By the way, I forgot to tell you, I have a business trip next Tuesday, driving to Indianapolis. Would you like to come with me?”

She bit her lip, pondering his question. “By Monday, I’ll have all midterms corrected and the results handed back to the students. When are you coming back?”

“I hope I can be back by Thursday.”

“I don’t have classes on Wednesday. I’ll cancel the Tuesday class and give them a research project to work in the library,” she mused aloud. “If I can be back in time for my Thursday class…”

“I’ll make sure you’re back on time.”

“Then I’m coming.”

Her lovely smile was worth every effort he would make to shorten his meetings and be done on Thursday.
