Chapter Fifteen
Determined to look her best when going out with Royce, Susan took an afternoon off and went shopping with her mother for fashionable outfit. Mae’s mood rose ten degrees when she stepped into women stores. Outrageously spoiled by her late husband, Carol Chen never hesitated to acquire an item she liked, regardless of its price. Having impeccable taste, she insisted on helping her daughter choose three new dresses and two pairs of pants.
A working woman, Susan thought twice about throwing her money away, but she couldn’t resist buying a cute pair of pantyhose, nude with two S designs in black embroidery on the side of each thigh.
“Don’t worry, sweetie, it’s a gift from your mom.”
“Thanks, Mae. You’re spoiling me.”
Deep down, she didn’t like her mother buying her clothes and controlling the way she dressed, but she had to admit the dresses fit her well.
When Royce picked her up, he came upstairs to say hello to her mother and kissed her on the cheek. In navy pants and a turtleneck polo matching the sky blue of his eyes, his long curly hair neatly combed, and his beard trimmed, he was a handsome specimen.
“Hi Royce, I’m ready.”
“Hi Su...” His jaw sagged. “You’re stunning. Your dress… It’s gorgeous.”
“Mae’s choice and gift to me.” She smiled at her mother who beamed.
The beige jersey with long sleeves and a flat round neck molded her figure to perfection and skimmed her thighs two inches above the knee. An amber pendant adorned the simple design, and a brown leather coat a bit shorter than the dress matched her high-heeled booties and her purse.
She’d twisted half of her hair into a donut and had let the rest of it fall down her back. Big, round, golden earrings, incrusted with amber stones, were affixed to her ears. As usual, she’d applied her heavy, dark eyeliner and mascara, fiery red lipstick, and had dabbed her perfume on her throat.
Considering that Royce couldn’t take his eyes off her and had totally lost the power of speech, she’d passed inspection with success.
Aware of the electricity charging the air, Mae asked, “How are things going at home with Kasem?”
“Huh…” Royce blinked, and Susan laughed.
“Mae’s asking you about Kasem, Royce.”
“Kasem is very busy at work and doing well. He likes his boss and the company.”
“Would you like a drink or maybe a cookie?”
“Thank you, Mrs. Chen. We’ll be having dinner at my brother’s. His wife Brenda is a good friend of Susan’s. I’m sure they’ll have a good time together, while I chat with my brother. Bye Mrs. Chen. Shall we, Susan?” He held her elbow and helped her to his car.
When she sat, the hem of her dress hiked to mid-thigh. Royce ogled the black design on the hose. “Cute and sexy. Perfect for us, an S and R hugging.”
She studied the design. “There’s no R.”
“Yes, there is. Look closely. One S and a reversed R intermingled,” he commented with a smug smile. “Love it.”
Laughing, she distracted him from staring at her legs while driving and showed him the gift bag hanging from her hand.
“I bought a gift for the baby.”
“That’s nice of you. He’s a year-old toddler now. Hyperactive and adorable.”
“I can’t wait to see him.”
Matt and Brenda received them with open-arms.
“It’s about time we see you again, Susan.”
Brenda thanked her for her gift and took her coat and Royce leather jacket.
“Where’s your baby?”
