“Your neighbor, General Clark, said he saw a car going through the gate. He knows Dr. Winston is out of town and thought some robbers had sneaked inside,” Officer Cortez explained in an amiable voice.

Fed up with the situation, Royce huffed. “What’s wrong with the old buck? I spent last weekend here, and he didn’t complain.”

“He was away and just returned yesterday.”

A sneeze followed by several ones interrupted their discussion.

The officers exchanged a glance. “Is there someone else here?”

“None of your business.”

“I saw the sleeping bag move.” Cortez narrowed his eyes. “What are you hiding there?”

“Would you please go away?” He lowered his voice. “My girlfriend doesn’t want to be seen.”

Both officers burst out laughing. “You hid your girlfriend in a sleeping bag?” Cortez said.

“Damn it, it’s none of your business.”

Grant narrowed his eyes. “Don’t tell me you were fooling around in that bag?”

Seething with frustration, Royce gritted his teeth.

“Oh man, they were getting busy in there, right?” Grant roared with laughter. “That the best search we’ve been sent on in a week. Not to worry, buddy. We don’t arrest people for having sex in a basement.”

“Hey, miss,” Cortez raised his voice addressing the sleeping bag. “Tell him to take you to a motel. At least, you’ll have a bed.”

“Shut up.” Royce had had it. “She’s not a motel girl. She’s the woman I love.”

“You don’t say. If you were my daughter, Miss, I would advise you to dump the jerk and find yourself a decent, serious boy who doesn’t take advantage of you in a basement.”

“I will,” Susan answered loud enough to be heard. Royce’s blood curded in his vein at her furious tone. “Officers, please leave. If my family hears of this, I’m dead meat.”

“Man, this is the best story to report.” Cortez slapped his thigh.

“Damn it, no report. I won’t allow it.”

“We won’t use names, but the boys at the station need a good laugh. Night, Royce. Night Miss.” Roaring with laughter, the two officers left.

Royce locked the door. “You can come out. We’re leaving.”

“Yes, we’re leaving. I don’t want to kill you in your own house.”

What a mess. No word or kiss could cheer her at this moment.
