“She left you?”

“More or less. I was doing everything possible to show her that I love her. What more can I do?”

Royce snickered. “Propose maybe?”

“She said I should propose the right way, buy a house where we can live together, and marry her.”

“It makes sense. That’s what every woman wants.” Royce poured himself a scotch. Hearing about Kasem’s problem reassured him that he wasn’t the only miserable man in the world.

“I just started a job. I don’t have any money saved.”

“And you already have a fiancée.”

“That’s not a problem.”

“How are you going to handle two fiancées? One would be enough trouble.”

Kasem tossed him a disgruntled look. “If things work out with Tracy, I’ll break up with my troublesome fiancée and marry Tracy right away.”

That was good news.

“I’ll help you, man,” Royce offered. “You’re my friend.”

“Thanks, but I don’t have the funds to buy a house.”

“Or a ring.”

“The ring is no problem. I’ll call my mother. She bought me a gorgeous ruby and diamond ring for the woman I’m going to marry. She’ll send it to me.”

“Wow, Tracy will be happy.”

“I wish, but she insists she wants to move in with me inourhouse. I can’t buy a house for a few years.”

“Sure, you can. You make a down payment and take out a loan from the bank for the rest of the amount.”

Kasem’s shoulders slumped. “I don’t have enough for a down payment.”

“Not to worry. I told you I would lend you the down payment. You’ll pay me back in a few months.”

“It’s a huge sum.”

“Listen, you’ll look for an older house in a good area and renovate it according to Tracy’s tastes. She’ll be delighted.” And so would Susan.

“Are you serious?”

The more Royce thought about it, the more he liked the idea of seeing Kasem married to Tracy and out of his way.

“Yes, I’m serious. I’ll help you. You need a good real estate agent. I’ll call my father’s. You can trust him. He sold this condo to Matt six years ago.”

Kasem’s somber expression morphed into a bright smile. “Man, you’re giving me so much hope. Call the real estate agent. I’m calling my mother. I can’t wait to have Tracy in my arms again.”

I hope I can get Susan in my arms again.

Royce called Ted Carter. “He’ll be here tomorrow morning at ten.”

“Great. It’s Saturday. Will you be here?”

“Yes.”
