What else did he have to do, now that Susan had banished him from her presence? Helping Kasem break up his relationship with her was at the top of his priorities.

“By the way, next week I’ll be in Indianapolis for a series of meetings with my clients. The place is all yours.”

“Thanks. I hope I can put it to good use.”

“I hope so too, but first get something concrete in hand before calling Tracy.”

He would do the same.

Weird how Kasem was turning from rival into best ally.

On that positive note, Royce stood. “I’m going to bed. Goodnight.”

“Night, Royce, and thanks again.”

Once in his bed, Royce texted Susan.

I’m deeply sorry that I’ve upset you. What a shame that our beautiful evening turned into such a mess. I love you and would never regret any time spent with you. On the contrary, I’ll treasure it. Please, don’t stay angry. I can’t wait to see you again and hold you in my arms.

Goodnight. Love you forever. R.

She answered with a laconic,Goodnight. But at least she’d read and acknowledged his text.

Ted Carter arrived at ten o’clock promptly. The man walked straight to the dining table and set down his laptop. In long pants and shirts, Royce and Kasem offered him coffee, brought their mugs, and settled at the table on each side of him, ready for business. He showed them a wide variety of houses, some fabulous two-stories priced in the millions that had Kasem sighing and shaking his head.

“How I wish I could buy them, but…”

“These are new, or old but renovated, houses. Now let me show some cheap ones you can afford. Remember, you can renovate the inside in any way you want. The important thing is location, location, location. That you can’t change.”

“Royce has already explained that.”

“Here are older houses in Blue Ash, Montgomery, and Kenwood, all greatly appreciated neighborhoods.” He showed them a dozen houses online and mentioned the interestingly affordable prices.

“Can we see them sometime?”

“Today. I have the keys. You can come with me. Sit and relax while I drive.”

By the end of the day, they’d seen ten houses. Kasem sighed. “I feel dizzy. Good thing we took pictures of each place.”

“I’ll leave the brochures with you. Compare them to your photographs. Choose two or three you want to see again. We’ll go tomorrow.” The real estate agent was determined to make a sale.

“All right. You’ve been very helpful,” Royce said.

“Now, I would like to take you to dinner and chat a little bit.”

The dinner was delicious, and they discussed their morning visits until Kasem chose three houses to visit again.

“Will you show them to Tracy and ask her to choose?” Royce asked.

“Don’t do that, Kasem,” Ted advised. “If your girlfriend sees a house in bad shape, she’ll call you a penny pincher and dump you. Trust me, I’ve seen it done often enough. You show her a picture of the exterior of the house and tell her you plan to make it her dream house. Ask her what she would like to have inside the house, her favorite colors, items…”

“Wow, you’re really experienced.”

“Thirty years selling houses has taught me a lot of psychology. I analyze people’s taste and sell them what I know they’ll like. I want happy customers.”

The man knew how to convince them.
