"Someone else then," Jake said. "Who? Did he mention someone?"

Cooper scrunched up his face in the most adorable way, obviously thinking furiously. "I feel like he mentioned someone, but the name won't come to mind."

"Was he trying to sell the garage?" Jake asked. "That would have solved all his problems. Well, all his financial problems. It wouldn't change the fact he fucked up so badly with us."

Cooper shook his head. "I don't think so. My uncle wasn't the smartest wrench in the toolbox, but he was proud. I think he was hoping if he kept paddling, the tide would turn his way at some point. There was never a chance of that though, was there? Not while Dagen was trying to use him to get to you. I mean, us."

"Not unless there was a mystery person helping him," I said. "Can you find out who it is? Your uncle might've kept something at his house. A phone number, anything?"

"I can try," Cooper agreed. He wandered off to play around with Rachel’s plastic wands.

"What are you thinking?" Jake asked.

"I'm wondering if there is someone else out there," I said slowly. "Someone who is working with or against Dagen. With or against us. The last thing we need is a war on two fronts."

He searched my face carefully. "You're thinking Silas was working with Zeta, or the Witch's Council, or someone like that?"

The Witch's Council was barely a blip on my radar, but Zeta was a huge, powerful organisation with connections to several major world governments. They mostly stayed out of my way because I paid the right people, but if they wanted to cause trouble for me,they certainly had the resources to cause a lot of it.

"I hope not," I said. "I have no doubt I can take down Zeta if I have to, but it would be a lot of work and headache."

Jake raised his eyebrows at me.

Yeah, okay, it was a hells of a claim to make, and frankly one I hoped I never had to back up. It would probably cost me more than I wanted to pay to do it. Especially in stress.

"There is another possibility," I said, partly to change the subject. "The grey wolves have been neutral for a long time. If anyone was going to help Silas from getting stuck between us and the Dagens, it would be them."

"They usually stay out of shit like that," Jake pointed out. "Unless they've decided to take sides."

"I'm fine with that, as long as they take ours." I watched fondly as Cooper swished a plastic wand around in the air like he was in a movie.

"And if they don't?" Jake asked.

I sighed. "Then we're going to have to have a long conversation with their Alphas. They'll think twice about fucking with us." As long as it was only speculation, and not the start of a whole another shit fight. I didn't want to take on the black wolves while the grey wolves were nipping at my tail.

"You want me to talk to them?" Jake asked.

I tapped my hand on my thigh. "That might be a good idea, yes. Let's nip that in the bud before it bears fruit. You have a blank cheque to deal with whatever comes up." That didn't always mean money. It meant I trusted him to do whatever he had to do, offer whatever he had to offer, threaten whatever he had to threaten, to get the grey wolves to stay out of our way.

"Blank cheques are my favourite," he said. "Don't worry, by the time I'm done, they'll slink back into the shadows."

"I hope so," I said. "I need to get back to Crimson. I have a meeting with someone."

Jake frowned. "Anything I need to worry about?"

"I'm not sure," I admitted. "I'll fill you in afterward."

He hated it when I wasn't forthcoming with information, but he knew better than to ask. He would know when I was ready to tell him.

"All right, boss, I look forward to it. Come on kid, time to go. Stop playing with your wand." Jake grinned.

Cooper laughed, put down the wand and trotted back over to us like a puppy. "You're just jealous because my wand is bigger than yours."

I shook my head and followed them out while they bantered about cock size.

Men.

At least they sounded relaxed. Me, I was on edge.
