“We are going a little to the south,” he said.

“Will we take long?”

“No. I will show you the border between Prozeus and Tarkus. Even from there, you will see the difference between our kingdom and theirs,” he said proudly. “I do intend to help them with their soil if they wanted to. I cannot encroach if they are happy with their current situation.”

“I understand,” was all I could say.

As we continued, the air became muggier. I was glad that I was wearing a white cotton dress instead of my frillier ones. Francilia chose to stay in the palace, saying that I needed more alone time with my husband. She truly believed that Metheus and I were falling in love or had already fallen for each other.

Despite the tension from earlier, I found myself relaxing as I saw that we were approaching a swath of desert sand. Drowsy from the camel’s movements and the warm temperature, I rested my back on Metheus’ chest. He did not complain.

“Open your eyes wide, Luella,” he said. I could almost imagine a grin on his face. He suspected I was falling asleep, and he was right.

“I am looking at it, Metheus. It’s beautiful,” I whispered, not straightening myself.

“During this moment, you can see what it is like to be a desert queen,” he murmured into my hair.

“A desert queen? I like the sound of that, Metheus,” I said, fully aware of how his palm rested on my stomach. I tried to forget its warmth and focus on the undulating waves of heat rising from the sand.
