“Lace. See through.” Faye snapped, motioning to her breasts.

Sparrow gave her a toothy grin. “But did it work?”

Faye turned to glare at her sister. “Pissing me off?”

Vashien’s voice rose over theirs. “Don’t toy with him. He’s dangerous.”

Sparrow snorted, walking to Vashien before taking a seat next to him at the table. “He’s fated to her.” To Faye she said, “Make him your bitch.”

“You’re not doing anything to him, you’re doing it to me.” Sparrow regularly dragged her along with her wild ideas, but this was the first time her sister disrespected her.

Her sister drooped in her chair. “Don’t be boring.”

“Don’t treat me like a blood whore!”

“Sparrow.” Vashien bit out. Faye quieted. He rarely spoke a harsh word. Her sister folded her arms and laid her head down, giving Vash her best pair of sad eyes. “You can’t play with him like a drunk dark-blood at my bar.”

Sparrow huffed and Vashien stroked her hair, glancing at Faye. “Are you okay? He didn’t touch you, did he?”

Faye shook her head. “He brought me a towel and left. He seems very big on the touch invitation thing.”

“That’s a good thing,” Vashien said.

Sparrow rolled her eyes. “It’s a boring thing.”

Faye glared at the top of her sister’s head then returned her attention to Vashien. “He seems hung up really hard on it.”

“He’s court born. He was raised with their protocols. It’s all he knows.”

Sparrow picked herself up off the table and leaned on Vashien’s shoulder. “You’re from a dark court.”

“Our court experiences are nothing alike. I joined and served in a court. I wasn’t born into one.”

“Thank the Darkness.” Sparrow fluffed her hair and peered past Faye. “It’s only one. He cut you loose early?”

Faye shrugged. “I guess.”

Sparrow’s toothy grin returned. “Maybe it did work.” Faye kicked her under the table and missed. “I’m sorry. Don’t be mad.” Faye glared at her unmoved. “I found your garden and a hot spring.”

“Shut up.” There was a hot spring in Hell? Faye’s mood brightened.

“You want to go for a soak or water your plants. They’re right next to each other.”

“When did you find them?”

“I went exploring. What, you think I just sit in my room waiting for Runey to get done with you?” Faye giggled as Sparrow stood. “Come on. I know you want to see your leafy babies.”

Sparrow linked arms with Faye as she stood, and Vashien gave her a pointed look. “Behave.”

Her sister drew anXover her heart and Faye followed her back to the great room. They went through the hall on the right lower level, and it opened to the balcony and gardens she’d seen at the Hunter’s Moon ball. Instead of gardens, crystals stuck out of the ground imitating trees and shrubs.

The same ornate fountains filled the space with the soft sound of flowing water. Faye stared at the benches and pathways. It was all here. Sparrow pulled her along as they walked through what had been the dance floor at the High Queen’s estate. Faye couldn’t help but glance at the spot the food display would have been where she first ran into Rune.

Faye wondered if it was all identical and the archway ahead of them would lead out. Sparrow led her further back into the gardens. The loose crystal scratching the sole of her boots. “His realm is beautiful, but it’s not what I expected.”

“I thought there would be souls here or something,” Sparrow said, kicking a chunk of crystal down the path. They turned a corner and Faye stilled. A stone archway rose before them. A lush green gardened appeared beneath the clear open skies, bathed in sunlight.

“How is this here?” Faye stood at the threshold and reached forward. The moment her hand crossed over, she felt the warmth of the sun beaming down. She stepped into the gardens and her attention was immediately stolen by the immaculate black rose bushes.
