They bickered back and forth for a few minutes, but Gideon was adamant and Mary Lou finally accepted the payment.
When she handed over the key, they walked out of the office, hand in hand again.
The room looked no different than the last time they’d stayed in it. Gideon brought in their luggage, then locked the door behind them.
Alex watched him move around the room, tears gathering in her eyes. This was the last thing she’d expected when they’d left Evanston this morning, but it was perfect. She took his hands and drew him close.
“This is so right,” she whispered. “The rest of our lives are starting where our life together began.” She wrapped her arms around his neck and burrowed in close. “I love you, Gideon Wolf. More than I ever thought it was possible to love. You own every bit of my heart. I want to spend the rest of my life with you. Share everything I have. Everything I am.
“And those kids who’ll want to hear about their dad proposing to their mom? I’m looking forward to meeting them some day.”
“Yeah?” Gideon said, smiling. “You’re amazing, Alex.” He traced her mouth with his finger. “You’re everything to me.”
“And you’re everything to me, Gideon.” She leaned back, studying his face, knowing that happiness was shining out of her eyes. “Our happily ever after is beginning in exactly the right place -- the town where I got to know you.
“Out of so much pain, so much fear, something beautiful grew. Knowing that you have my back, no matter what, means everything to me.”
She kissed Gideon again, then twined their fingers together. “I had that with only one other person in my life, and I only had Mary for a handful of years. Now I have you. I promise I’ll never betray your trust. I’ll always have your back, no matter what. And you’ll never have any reason to doubt that I love you.”
She took a deep breath. Let go of his hands to wrap her arms around his neck. “This tiny town, where I went from being terrified of you to falling in love with you, is the perfect place to start our happily ever after.”
