“Obviously,” she said with a laugh. “Full disclosure, we went on a couple of dates. I can’t remember if I told you that or not.”

“I had a feeling. Don’t worry, I’m not concerned.”

“Oh, really?” She leaned up on her elbow, raising an eyebrow. “Not concerned about another guy finding me attractive? That’s…interesting.”

“Uh-oh, I’ve awoken the sass. You know I didn’t mean it like that. I’m sure there are plenty of guys hitting on you all the time.”

She narrowed her eyes and smiled. “Go on.”

Laughing, I ran my hand through her hair, savoring the way the curls felt between my fingertips.

“You’re gorgeous, so of course, guys are hitting on you. Duh.”

Reluctantly, she laughed. I could tell she didn’t want to back down so easily.

“I’m just saying that after meeting the guy, I knew you wouldn’t be into him,” I said matter-of-factly.

“Why is that?”

“Other than the fact that he’s a douche who throws away perfectly good Slurpees?”

She held back a laugh, closing her mouth tight. “Yes, besides that.”

“Well,” I said, choosing my words carefully. “I’ll admit, he’s a decent-looking dude. But I know you, and he’s just too…dull, boring.”

“You can tell that just from one interaction with the guy?”

“Yeah, I think so. He doesn’t seem to have much to him—like one of those Victoria’s Secret models. He’s, like, vapid or something.” I paused. “Am I wrong?”

“No, you’re actually 100 percent right. He’s totally bland. And we have nothing in common. I mean nothing. If I like something, he hates it and vice versa. Plus, the second you came into the store, he got jealous and acted like an idiot. No thanks.”

I cleared my throat dramatically. “And, you know, you’re also crazy about someone else.”

“Obviously,” she said, rolling her eyes dramatically before giving me a chaste kiss. “So, earlier, before I was so rudely interrupted, I was saying that I’m free tonight if you want to hang out.”

“Oh, really?” I asked, flirting.

“Yep. And you? Are you available, Mr. Johansen?”

“Yep,” I said, kissing her again. “I’m all yours.”

“I like the sound of that.”

“And I like the sound of you calling me Mr. Johansen. It’s sexy as hell.”

“Is it, now?” she asked, nuzzling into my neck and dragging her fingernails down my chest. I moaned.

With a start, she sat up once again, patting me on the leg as if she hadn’t just turned me on two seconds earlier.

“Maybe I can bring back some movies. Or you can meet me at the store, we can pick some out together, and grab dinner or something. I’m pretty sure Kevin isn’t working.”

“Sounds perfect,” I said with a sigh. “And I don’t care if he is.”

“I like when you get like that. Confident with just the tiniest bit of arrogance. It suits you.”

“Really?” I asked. “Good to know.”

“Ugh, I have to jump in the shower. My window for getting ready is getting dangerously small.”
