She narrowed her eyes, looking surprised. “So, it’s a romance?”

“No, I wouldn’t say that.” I shook my head. “More like a subplot of the bigger story. It’s an adventure series aimed at older kids. You know, for when they outgrow regular Saturday morning cartoons.”

“A TV show?”

“Maybe one day.”

“You’re dreaming big. I like it.”

“Thanks.”

“Ambitious for a freshman. You are a freshman, right?” she asked, and I nodded in response.

“Yep.”

“I had a feeling. Same here.”

“It’s all I’ve ever wanted to do—since I was a little kid.”

“When I was little, I wanted to be a soap opera star. You know, like Susan Lucci,” Dahlia said, flipping her hair behind her shoulder. “But now, I’m more focused on Broadway.”

“Dreaming big, right?”

“You know it,” she said with a nod.

“So, why are you taking animation classes?”

She shrugged. “I don’t know…because I needed another elective, and this one seemed like fun. I’m having some buyer’s remorse though.”

“How come?”

“Because I can’t draw to save my life. I’ll be lucky if I pass the class.”

Chuckling, I shook my head. “Maybe I can help you.”

“Really? Oh, my God, I was hoping you’d say that. I’m a mess.”

“Sure. As long as your boyfriend won’t mind.” I raised both eyebrows and tilted my head to the side.

“Ruben? Nah, he’s the most laid-back person on the planet, and he knows I can’t draw worth shit. Actually, you two would probably get along. He lives at Langford, too. Maybe we can all hang out.”

Ruben. That’s not exactly a common name.

“Does he live on the third floor?” I asked, intrigued.

Dahlia nodded. “Why? Do you know him?”

“I’m in 310, and there’s a Ruben two doors down from me.”

“Yep, that’s him. Geez, what are the chances? I guess you two already know each other.”

“Kinda, yeah. We’ve hung out a couple of times. And when I first saw you, you looked familiar. He has a picture of you on his desk, doesn’t he?”

“Yep,” she said with a smile, tucking her hair behind her ears as we approached the door to Langford Hall. “Wow, that’s so random.”

“I know,” I said, shaking my head and holding the door open for her. “Are you going to his room?”

“Yeah, why not? If he’s not home, I’ll leave a message on his board.”
