Together, we climbed the stairs to the third floor and found Ruben’s door wide open. The room pulsed with a familiar, intense beat as the smooth sound of Snoop Dogg poured into the hallway.

“Ru, seriously, it’s too loud. You’re going to get written up,” Dahlia said, walking into the room and flopping onto his bed, laying her head on his thighs. Ruben, a tall and muscular guy, was lounging in bed, sketching. He laughed, running his fingers through her hair.

“No way. My R.A. loves me.” He glanced my way. “Hey, man. What’s up?”

“You know Wyatt, right? He lives a couple of doors down—he’s in my animation class.”

“Of course, sit down, hang around for a minute.”

“Thanks,” I said, easing into the bean bag chair in the corner of the room. “Dahlia says you read anime.”

He nodded. “You too, man?”

“Yep.”

“Sweet. You got any in your room?”

“Sure. If you ever want to borrow some, let me know.”

“Yeah, that’d be cool. You okay with Snoop?”

“Definitely,” I said.

“Cool,” Ruben said, pointing to the neon green milk crate under his raised bed. “Feel free to look through mine. They’re all in there.”

“Nice,” I said, scooting forward and reaching into the crate.

“Wyatt’s going to help me pass my animation class,” Dahlia said, sitting up and leaning against the wall.

“Good luck, man. She’s a hot mess.”

“Ru!”

“I’m just playin’.” He chuckled. “I tried helping her, but that was a mistake.”

“That’s because you’re a horrible teacher.”

“Right, sure, whatever,” he said with a laugh. “I don’t know why you took that class. Should’ve just taken something easy.”

“Like what? Flower arranging?”

I looked up from the comic I was holding. “Actually, flower arranging is tougher than it seems.”

Dahlia raised an eyebrow. “And you know this…why?”

“My mom worked for a florist in Trondheim,” I said with a shrug. “I tried helping once. It did not go well.”

“Trondheim? Is that in Wisconsin?”

“Oh, sorry, Norway.”

“You went to Norway?” Dahlia asked.

“Yeah, we lived there for two years.”

“Wow, that’s so random.”

Ruben put down his sketch pad. “What was that like?”
