“We were talking about Twister. Have you seen it?”

“Helen Hunt, right? They’re, like, tornado chasers or something?”

“Yep.”

“No, haven’t seen it yet, but it’s on my boyfriend’s list. But no, no tornadoes here. I’m just…having a day, and the wind messed my hair up. Badly.”

“What’s going on?” Naomi asked. “Why are you having a bad day?”

“Long story,” Hannah said, running her fingers through her black hair. “Dutch, I know you’re out of state, but what about you two? Are you both staying in Illinois this summer?”

“Probably. Why?”

“I just found out I need to staff up. Marley usually works summers for me, but she’s spending the summer in Georgia with Emmett. They’re going to work at a summer camp.”

“Aww, that’s cute.”

“I know, and I’m happy for them, but I’m freaking out a little bit, especially since I was supposed to have Kevin all summer, too. And we all know what happened there.”

“Sorry,” I said through clenched teeth.

“Are either of you willing to stay and work this summer? I can give you decent hours and a pay bump. Corporate is pushing every branch to staff up, even campus locations.”

“You want both of us?” I asked, looking at Naomi and back to Hannah.

“If I can get you both, yeah.”

“Seriously?” Naomi asked.

“Totally. Are you interested?”

“As much as I’d love to, I’ll have to talk with my parents. They rely on me to help out at home, especially during the summer. So…I’m probably a no.”

“What about you, Tilly?”

“I was trying to sublet my apartment. I have the flyers ready to go, but…maybe I won’t. You said something about a pay bump?”

“Yep. Please. I’m really in a pickle.”

“How can someone be inside a pickle?” Dutch asked, tapping his chin. We all stared at him, and Hannah sighed.

“I’m really not in the mood, Dutch.”

“Sorry.”

Hannah made her way to the back room, and I followed close behind.

“Can you let me know this week, Tilly? Otherwise, I’ll have to hire someone, and we have almost no decent applications in the pile.”

“Sure. I’m really sorry…about Kevin.”

“Don’t be,” Hannah said. “He was a total ass. I was already talking to corporate about letting him go. I wasn’t thrilled with how Sully did it, but it was inevitable. And Kevin was way out of line the other night. If I were here, I probably would’ve done the same thing.”

“So, Sully’s not in any trouble, is he? He was defending me…and my boyfriend.”

“Boyfriend, huh?” Hannah asked, raising one playful eyebrow.

“Yeah, um…it’s new. And old at the same time.”
