His lips tilted in a grin like a lion caught in the bushes before pouncing on the lamb. She held a laugh.

His grin grew into a full smile. “Let’s see. There was this one girl in college. Elizabeth Jenkins.”

Juniper wrote the name down. Finding contact info would be easier later.

“Next.”

She tapped her pencil on her lips and considered her list. If she wanted real answers from him, she needed to give like for like. “I like a man that can argue his point while respecting mine.”

“Nice one. It’s not so easy to find that in a man. It takes a special kind of upbringing.”

She canted her head to the side. “True and thank you. Growing up my mom and dad would discuss for hours where they stood on topics ranging anywhere from what color of tree lights they wanted to use that year to bigger ideas and concepts. They never raised their voices or disrespected each other. Early on I found I wanted that, too.”

He gave her a gentle look of understanding as she spoke.

“It was the same way at my house. But not with my grandparents. I truly don’t see how they stayed married for over forty years. Okay, so I guess that makes it my turn.”

She nodded and drank deeply, ready for the next name to add to her list. “Mary Klein.”

“Now you.”

“Hold up! Come on, you gotta give me more than that. Some history would be nice. A phone number.”

“Well, we dated about three years back. It didn’t take. She was arm candy to deflect my dad’s attention away from my lack of dating. She was a sweet woman though. I don’t have a number. It was just platonic dinners at best.”

“Now you.”

“Hmm… Okay.”

“And I want more than the vanilla version of this list. You’re giving me something you’ll let your mom see.”

She blushed.

“I need a man that can spank my ass and make me cum multiple times. How's that for spicy?”

“Oh, baby,” he growled, his expression going from amused to hungry in a flash. Like she could see the heat of lust in his dark eyes and it was tied to her core. Crackles of fire tightened every muscle in her body and pooled between her thighs wetting her panties.

They needed safer ground. She couldn't ride him right here in the middle of his office with so many others wandering the halls and that was exactly what his expression suggested.

“Here, I’ll give you a freebie,” she started. She eyed his black leather boots and smiled. “I think you’ll like this one. I love every—and I mean every—single John Wayne movie.”

Marshall’s head fell back as he let out a deep belly laugh.

“You keep surprising the hell out of me, Juniper.”

She shrugged, not wanting to add how ‘must be a cowboy’ became a number on her list just a few days ago because of him. Come to think of it, given her love for a Southern drawl, she didn’t know why it wasn’t there to begin with. Probably would have saved her a few embarrassing and dull dates.

“Do you want quotes and impersonations to go along with that rule?”

Her eyes widened. “That would null and void the entire list. I would marry anyone that can pull off his half-drunk walk and twangy, rugged voice!” She threw up her hands. “I swear it right now,” she laughed.

Marshall’s boots hit the floor before she knew what he was up to. In fluid motions he grabbed his hat from where’d tossed it to the side upon their arrival and from somewhere he pulled a white handkerchief and tied it around his neck true John Wayne style.

Be still her damn heart, what was he doing?
