“The final courses are now served.” The chef pulled out a chair and looked at me. “Miss?”

William escorted me to my seat, and I waited until he was settled before picking up my fork.

“I’d like to skip the club stop on your list,” he said. “If possible.”

“Not good at dancing?”

“I’m great at dancing.”

“Then what’s the reason?” I raised my eyebrow.

“It’s a long story,” he said, looking slightly wistful for the first time tonight.

I stuffed a mini meatball into my mouth. I had no interest in going to a club either.

My night was fine without it.

“If we skip it, you’ll have to make it up to me somehow,” I said.

“I’m more than happy to do that.”

“In that case, that leaves whatever you wanted to do for your birthday. Want to go on one of those midnight city tours?”

“No.” He shook his head. “I’d rather do something reckless that I can’t do back at home. Nothing typical or birthday-like.”

I tapped my foot under the table. There was a certain something I wanted to do every year, but Madison and Kristin were far too professional (and far too scared) to ever consider it. No matter how “epic” I said it would be, they turned me down.

“Want to smoke weed and ride The Great Wheel?” I asked.

“Come again?”

“Since I have the worst boss in the world, I have to smoke weed now and then to deal with her, so…” I opened my purse and showed him six tightly rolled joints and blunts. Then I pointed to the Ferris wheel that anchored the pier.

“We should smoke all these and take a ride,” I said. “After that, if there’s time, I’ll use a spare key to my friend’s ice cream shop for a final dessert, and we’ll call it a night.”

He remained silent for several moments, looking torn between leaving me here alone and pulling me closer.

“If you’re worried about red eyes, don’t be. I have the ultimate kit.” I pulled out eye drops, a pack of mini Twinkies, and three pairs of oversized sunglasses. “No one will ever know we’re blazed, and if you’re against it, we can do everything sober, of course.”

“I’m not the slightest bit worried about anything.” He took the Twinkies and a pair of shades from me. “I’d like to join you.”

“For the Ferris Wheel and dessert part, or the weed part?”

“All of it.”

An hour later

High as a summer kite,I laughed as the wheel rose into the night sky. William placed his blazer over my shoulders, keeping his eyes on mine with every new spin.

For some strange reason, we had the entire ride to ourselves. What’s more, there wasn’t a single person anywhere near the pier, which was an anomaly for a Saturday night.

As we rounded the bottom, I pointed to the photo booth.

“We should take a few shots in there together before we leave.”

“You’re changing your mind about my photo?”
