“I didn’t mean that. I meant that you were on a date. I saw you earlier.”

“You did?” he asked. “Why didn’t you join me?”

“Hello, you were with a woman.”

“Oh, you mean at Absinthe? That’s Cassandra. Remember I told you about being her fake date at a college reunion? She’s gay.”

“Oh right, sure.” I took a breath to still my racing heart. “I guess I should go. I still hate you.”

“You sound bored.”

“I’m not bored. I’m seeing Jack, and I’m really happy.” That felt like swallowing a mouthful of shit and insisting it tasted nice.

“Ivy, what are you doing? Are you really together? I mean, he’s not a good guy.”

“Are you only worried about me getting hurt?”

“Well, yeah. You’re my friend. Of course, I’m worried. He’s a jerk. Not to be fucking trusted.”

“Is that all I am to you? A friend?” I hated my whiny little voice and how ridiculously needy that sounded.

“Why don’t we meet? I’d love to see you. We can talk about everything. I can explain what you mean to me.”

“By fondling my breasts.” A burn that had been missing flushed through me at the thought of Chase sucking on my nipples as though he were feasting on something delicious.

“As much as I’d love to do that…” His voice grew raspier.

Oh my God, this guy is killing me.He was horny, just like me. Why did I mention fondling?

“I just want to see you,” he said. “I miss talking to you. I’ve also found this brilliant space in Brooklyn that I thought I could turn into a great venue.”

“In Brooklyn? I thought you were going for the high end of the market.”

“There are a ton of those. I’m thinking of something a little hipsterish. You know, alternative and theatrical. A performance space like Rouge but bigger and lushier.”

“Hipsterish? Lushier?” I laughed. I stretched out like a happy feline. Just chatting felt great.

“I could use your creative take on it. I’d love for you to see it. Maybe you might be interested in jumping in, you know, on the design side of things.”

A knock came to my door. “One minute,” I said.

Jack walked in, without being invited. Grr…

“I’m just on the phone,” I whispered.

Ignoring that, he said, “Can we talk?”

Hello, what part of “I’m on the phone” didn’t you get?

I stared at him. Was he about to break up with me? I hoped so. It would have been the easiest option. “Just give me a moment.”

I returned to my call.

“Who’s that?” Chase asked.

“Just someone visiting,” I said.

“A new guy? Or is that Jack?”
