“None of your business,” I said.

“Hey, that’s not fair. I told you about Cassandra.”

“I’ve got to go.”

“Hey, Jack’s not to be trusted. He owes a lot of people money in this town.”

“You just hate him because you fucked his girlfriend and got caught.”

I hung up on him before he could say anything. More out of frustration.

Jack smirked. “Let me guess, Chase Elliot?”

I rolled my eyes and returned an ironic smile.

I almost screamed at him to get out. The last thing I wanted was to hang out with Jack, let alone kiss him.

He hovered about, scratching his neck as if he had a rash.

I exhaled sharply. I knew that this had to end. Like now.

“Look, Jack, maybe sit down for a minute. I think we need to talk.”

His eyebrows gathered. “If you’re about to break up with me, then I’ll save you the trouble. This isn’t working for me.”

“Okay.” I picked at my chipped nail polish.

“You’re just not my type,” he continued, looking anywhere but at me.

“And you’re not mine.” I matched his cold, matter-of-fact tone.

What had I seen in him in the first place?

Revenge, stupid. Apart from good looks, Jack was as entertaining as a nerd solving complex algebra.

“I think we can both agree that this thing between us was to get back at Chase,” he said.

“Guilty as charged.” I sighed, slumping back on the sofa. I hated admitting that.

Jack remained disturbingly unaffected. “To that end, it worked. I’ll never forget how mortified Chase looked seeing you with me.” His face warmed slightly.

Good old-fashioned schadenfreude. I wasn’t exactly devoid of that emotion. Only it was a cold victory. My heart still ached for Chase.

“I get it. He betrayed you.” I adjusted my weight. My leg had gone numb. Or was that my heart? “But it takes two to tango.”

“True.” Remaining upright, he fiddled with a figurine on my shelf of childhood knickknacks. “Chase saved me from marrying a slut.”

I grimaced at his icy tone.

And she was saved from marrying a cold-hearted jerk.

With nothing to add, I smiled weakly at him, hoping he’d make a speedy exit.

He clasped his hands. “Well then. Be seeing you. I’ve got some business with Mitch.”

“Sure. You can see yourself out.”

He nodded and turned.

And that was the end of that.

I thought about the girl Jack had referred to as a slut. Had I been dating Jack at the time, I might have also fallen into bed with Chase.

Was I defending oversexed college students and hormonally driven immorality?

Well… I hadn’t been exactly an angel. Not that I cheated with a best friend’s boy.

Refusing to let that brainteaser consume me, I decided to stop thinking and go to bed.
