“You’re a good-looking, filthy-rich bachelor who’s had a charmed life. On that front, you don’t have to prove yourself at all.”
He pulled a face as though he’d eaten something bad. “You’re describing a slacker.”
“I don’t think you’re a slacker,” I said. “And why the sudden self-doubt?”
“We can all use a shake-up, I suppose.” He sighed. This was the most serious I’d ever seen him. “My father wants to put me in charge of the family company.”
“Oh. Running an ad agency. That could be fun,” I said.
He shook his head and grimaced.
“What do you want to do?”
He glanced down at the menu. “Right now, I want to order. I’m starving.”
“Me too.”
The waiter stood by our table waiting for us to decide.
“Do you know what you want?” Chase asked.
“Yep. A rare steak.”
The waiter scribbled it down. “With the side salad?”
I nodded. “Sure.”
“I’ll have the same,” Chase said, passing the waiter his menu.
“My mother has this new boyfriend who’s virtually moved in. They’re vegans.”
“And you aren’t allowed to eat meat at home?” he asked.
“Not allowed to cook it. I really should move. But I can’t afford it.”
Chase was about to comment when his face turned to stone. I turned around to see who’d taken his attention and saw a guy heading in our direction.
“Do you know him?” I asked.
“Uh-huh.”
The next minute, the man stood next to our table.
“Twice in one week. And a different date, I see,” he said, gazing over at me and lingering.
A different date?
“You’re not going to introduce us?” he asked.
“This is my girlfriend, Ivy.” Chase regarded me then gestured at the tall man. “This is Jack Whitman.”
I nodded. “Pleased to meet you.”
“Likewise,” he said, his eyes sticking to mine as though he’d already removed my clothes. “Oh, well, enjoy your dinner.” He turned to Chase. “And I’ll be seeing you at the pitch for Elixir. Are you going?”
“I wouldn’t miss it for the world,” Chase said with a forced grin.
After Jack Whitman left us, Chase muttered under his breath, “Jerk.”
