I sat on the bed and bounced on it. “A firm bed.”

Chase pushed me down gently. “My favorite kind.”

When a knock came, we sprang up, sharing a guilty smile, and Chase strutted over to answer the door.

A man, also in loose white clothes, entered. “I’ve come to welcome you to Elysium.” He held out his hand. “My name’s Aadhar, and I will be your facilitator.”

We nodded at the same time and gave each other a side glance. Something told me we were in for a busy weekend.

“If you have any questions, don’t hesitate to call out.” He handed us each a sheet. “This is an itinerary of our activities.”

“Are we required to participate in everything?” I asked, running my eyes over the very tight schedule.

“No. You are free to do as you please. But there are some excellent detoxifying programs.”

“Thanks,” Chase said. “We might start off with a meal. Is there a cafeteria?”

Aadhar smiled. “A buffet lunch will be served between twelve and two.”

Chase rubbed his hands. “Good. I’m starved. Is there any coffee?”

Aadhar shook his head with frightening decisiveness. “No stimulants. But they serve a lovely alternative: chicory root and dandelion. Very delicious.”

He might as well have informed Chase his pet had been killed.

“Okay, if that will be all, my number’s on that sheet. I hope you enjoy your stay.”

After he left, Chase shook his head. “No coffee for two days. I’ll go crazy.”

As someone just as dependent on coffee, I nodded with a pout. “We could always sneak out and get a takeout. The nearest cafes are about twenty miles, from memory.”

“At least I brought some vodka. And a bottle of bourbon.”

“You did?”

“Well, I figured a healthy retreat wouldn’t exactly be serving liquor.”

A knock at the door froze my giggle, and we regarded each other as though it were a raid. I cocked my head toward the bottles.

Chase combed back his hair roughly. “This is supposed to be a relaxing getaway.”

After he hid the bottles, I answered the door, and yet another man in white appeared. This one was bearing a tray with two green juices. “Compliments for your stay.”

“Oh, that’s nice, thanks.” I pointed to the table. “Just set them there.”

“If you’re booking a colonic purge, then we suggest you fast.” He looked at his watch. “You can book three hours after the juice.”

I looked at Chase, who returned a look of horror as though I’d asked him to visit a morgue.

“Um… we’ll probably pass on the purge,” I stammered.

The staff member wore a polite, but disapproving, smile. “Do consider it. It’s cleansing and helps to optimize the detoxification process. Here, we believe in the holistic approach.” He tapped his stomach, his heart, and his head.

“Yes. Good. We’ll keep that in mind. Thanks.” I practically pushed him out the door.

Chase unscrewed the vodka cap.

“What are you doing?” I asked. “It’s not even noon.”
