“So she was older?” she asked again.

“Why do you keep asking?”

“You told me you don’t go for older women.” She bit her lip.

“I don’t normally. But, hey, I was nineteen at the time, and I ran into her at a party, and you know…”

She remained quiet.

“What’s this about?” I asked.

“I guess I haven’t quite got over the fact that Mitch ended up with my mother after dumping me.”

“He dumped you?” I frowned in shock. She might as well have admitted to him prancing around in her panties.

She stared down at her hands and nodded slowly. “I’m insecure about my mother all of a sudden.”

“I’m crazy about you, Ivy.” I leaned over and took her soft, warm hand. “And I’d hate to have to greet everyone in Sanskrit while answering to a hard-to-pronounce Hindu name or a name with a ton of double vowels.”

“Double vowels?”

“Like aardvark.”

“Aardvark?” Her brow scrunched. “Oh, you mean like, Aahdar?”

Her face brightened into a laugh.

“That’s better,” I said, tickling her palm. “In any case, you and Mitch. That I don’t quite get.”

She shrugged. “I met him at a Tantra session.”

“So you went to Tantra of your own accord?” I didn’t hide my surprise.

“My mother thought I needed to deepen my experience with men. She hated how Tinder was messing with my head.”

“Tinder can get pretty messy.” I thought of all the times I’d been forced to hide after seeing former dates who’d wanted more than just fun. “So you met Mitch while gazing into his eyes?”

She nodded with a glum grin, as though admitting to dating a dork.

“Hey, he’s a good-looking dude.” Was I batting for the ex?

“He is, but you’ve met him, and you know me. It was never going to work.”

“Did you at least have good sex?” I felt a little queasy over that intimate question—a new reaction, given that I’d never been the jealous type.

“It was okay. Kind of bland. Like tofu.”

I laughed. “That’s a fair analogy.”

“How long did you date?” I asked.

“Three months.”

“Shit. That’s a long time.”

“What’s the longest relationship you’ve had?”

I guzzled my coffee and grabbed the account. “Hey, this was about you, wasn’t it?” I headed to pay the account and Ivy followed.
