Liam walked in. “What’s all fine?”

“Ivy knows about Chase being forced to marry or be cut off.”

“Oh, what a relief,” Liam said. “We weren’t sure what to say. Whether to mention it.”

The food I’d snacked on rushed up my throat, and I made a mad dash to the bathroom.

I fell onto my knees at the toilet bowl and vomited.

Sara came in and held my hair back. “Oh dear. Are you pregnant?”

I went to the basin and gargled some water. “No. It must have been something I ate.”

Seeing Liam with his concerned frown tipped me over the edge, and I burst out crying.

“He told me I was the love of his fucking life.” I sniffled. “And he only asked me because I was an expedient choice?”

Sara’s eyes lit up with alarm. “You didn’t know?”

Blowing my nose, I shook my head.

She held her mouth. “Holy fucking crap. I’m so sorry. I shouldn’t have said anything. But when you said he told you everything, I thought…”

“Don’t worry.” I blew my nose. “I’m glad you did. I’d prefer to know. At least I’m avoiding a divorce in two years. Or whatever the deal was that he made with his dad. No wonder I got the cold treatment from his mom.”

“Oh, that’s Renata. She’s cold to everyone,” Liam said.

Sara nodded. “She hardly speaks to me.”

I stared down at my hands. Everything seemed a blur.

“What are you going to do?” Liam asked.

“I’m going to get seriously drunk, make an ass of myself, and then leave first thing in the morning.”

“He does really like you, you know?” Sara said. “I feel so bad.”

“Don’t,” I said. “I was about to sail into a sham marriage. You saved me from that.”

“I don’t believe that would’ve happened,” Liam said. “Chase is into you. I can tell by the way he looks at you. Even while he was working the console, his eyes were on you all the time.”

That didn’t help. I bawled like a baby. I knew Chase liked me. That was why it hurt.

Liam held me, and I cried all over his designer shirt. “Sorry. I’m making a mess.”

“Don’t worry about that,” he said. “You’re both seriously into each other, which means that in a few months, you’ll be inseparable.”

We already were.

I puffed out a breath. “Maybe. But would he have proposed if he hadn’t been forced to?”

“Ask him,” Sara said. “Before doing something drastic, talk to him about it.”

I picked at my nails. “I guess I will. You guys go back in. I’ll be there in a minute.”

I plonked down on the bed and noticed myself in the cheval mirror. The sudden crash had aged me. Bliss had given me a glow that even good makeup couldn’t produce. And now sadness had made me ugly.

What was I expecting anyway? He’d chosen me. Not Esme or any of the many society girls he could have asked. They would have forgone a month of selfies or even Botox to marry Chase.

Just as I was fixing my makeup, Chase swaggered into the bedroom, wearing his sexy grin, which faded when his eyes met mine.

“What’s up? Are you not feeling well?” He joined me on the bed and draped his arm over my shoulder.

“So, you only proposed to me because your father threatened to cut you off?”
