“It brings me great pleasure to announce our engagement.”

Everyone clapped and cheered. I caught Liam’s gaze, and his eyes seemed to pop out from his head.

I spoke into my phone. “Did you catch that, Mom?”

“Oh, darling, I’m so happy for you.”

“You don’t think it’s too soon?” I asked.

“No. You’re really suited. And I noticed a change in both of you. See? I told you that Tantra can be a powerful way of discovering each other’s soul.”

“It kind of was a little surprising,” I said. “Anyway, I wish you were here. There’s a party. It’s pretty impromptu in that it coincided with their annual summer beach house get-together.”

“Then I’ll come to next year’s one,” she said.

“I love you, Mom.”

“I love you, too, darling. And Chase is a good fit.”

Oh yeah, if only she knew how good.

“I have to go and join the guests. Sara and Liam are both dying to speak to me.”

“Bye-bye,” she said.

I closed the call and joined my fiancé, who was shaking everyone’s hands.

His father came up to me and hugged me. “Nice to have you in the family.”

My future mother-in-law remained stone-faced, which sent a cool shiver down my spine. She leaned in and kissed me on the cheek. “Congratulations. You have finally managed to do what half of Manhattan couldn’t.”

She sounded disappointed. Was I a disappointment? I glanced at Chase’s dad, who gave me a subtle don’t-worry-about-my-wife nod.

I went to check on my makeup after tearing up, and as I left the bathroom, I nearly bumped into Sara.

“Oh, there you are,” I said.

She giggled. “I’m drunk. I’ve only had a few glasses of champagne. But, wow… it feels so nice. I pumped enough milk for two days, so I can let my hair down.”

I smiled. “You earned it.”

She looked at my ring. “It’s gorgeous. It really suits you. It goes with your lovely blue eyes.”

“Chase said that too.”

She smiled sadly as though something wasn’t quite right.

“Do you think it’s too soon?” I asked, trying to read her.

“No… but…” She couldn’t look at me.

“I’m sensing something here.”

“Um… Chase came into the shop to get advice from Hunter about the agency and how his father’s expecting him to take over the reins.”

“I know all about that. He’s told me everything.”

“Oh. Good. He has. Then it’s all fine.”
