She grabbed my arm to stop me, but I gently released her hand. My lips strained into a reassuring smile.

I stood between him and the girl he was probably propositioning. “A word.”

He glanced at the young woman who didn’t even look twenty. Wearing a low-cut dress, the brunette was his latest project. By the looks of the stars in her eyes, he’d obviously conquered her interest.

“Can’t it wait?” He inclined his head towards his pretty fan.

“No. Now.” I pointed at the exit. “Outside.”

“Ooh… do I need my bodyguard?” Flexing his billionaire muscle, he regarded his young victim and grinned.

I cocked my head. “Outside. Now.”

Just as he turned his back, I whispered to the girl, “Watch your drink. He’s known for spiking them.”

I left her standing there with a shocked frown planted on her heavily made-up face.

Ethan, who was chatting to a couple of girls, watched on as I followed Crisp outside.

As I joined him outside, Crisp went to light a cigar, and I knocked it out of his mouth.

“Hey.” His smirk faded, revealing the ugly man behind that mask of cool charm.

I grabbed him by the collar. My nose close to rubbing his. Eyeballing those cold, indifferent eyes.

“Stop hitting on Theadora, you sleazy piece of shit.”

“Let go of me, or I’ll have you up for assault.”

I mocked his threat with an untroubled grunt. “I don’t fucking think so. I’ve got enough on you to take you down. The only reason I haven’t done so is because, for some twisted reason, my mother is protecting you. You’re a fucking grimy scumbag. A criminal.”

“That’s bullshit. I only go with consenting girls.”

“By drugging them?”

He struggled out from my clutch, and I pushed him, causing him to stumble.

He got up and ironed out his shirt with his hands. “She wanted it. She opened her legs for all to see.” His mouth turned up at one end. He was either a glutton for punishment or just plain stupid because that made me see red.

My knuckles crunched loudly, and he fell back onto the grass, where he writhed in pain, holding his face.

Ethan and some guests arrived just as I was picking him up like a sack of potatoes about to pummel him.

“Declan, no,” Ethan implored. “It’s not worth it.”

I took a stilling breath. He was right.

In any case, Crisp had been clobbered, going on his bloodied nose.

I rubbed my fist, which throbbed in pain, and then straightened my jacket, smoothed down my hair, and re-entered the party, leaving Crisp with blood streaming down his face.

Ethan followed me back in. “That was one hell of a punch. You’ve missed your calling.”

“It felt fucking good,” I responded, as I headed back to my girl.

I found her chatting with her past colleagues.

She smiled at them and joined me. Her eyes wide and worried. “Are you okay? I wasn’t sure what to do.”
