“It’s all good, angel. I think he’s got the message.” Although not a fan of violence, that punch felt good, like an unsightly boil had finally burst.

I took her by the hand and led her into the sitting room, where a couple canoodled on the chaise lounge.

“Let’s give them privacy, shall we?” She smiled back, and I led her up the stairs. “Let’s go to my room.”

I opened the door for her to pass.

She looked about. “It’s different to how I imagined.”

“Oh, really? What were you expecting?”

“I guess pictures of girls and cars. Sports stars.” She scanned the blue walls, on which hung original landscapes. She picked up a framed picture of my former dog. “He’s cute.”

“I still miss him.”

“Why not get another?” she asked.

“I hate it when they die. My heart broke when I lost him.”

She cuddled me. “You’re just a giant softy.”

I ran my hands over her curves, and my night lightened. I went to lift her dress when she wiggled out of my arms.

“No. We need to talk.”

Talk about a speedy come down. I gulped. “Okay.”

She stood at the window that opened into a balcony. “What happened with Jasmine?”
