As the night progressed, the merchandise sold out, and Juni became swamped with orders.

When Clint’s DJ boyfriend cranked up the music, things heated up, and the room exploded into an impromptu dance party.

Ethan cozied up with a model, and it warmed my heart to see him smiling. Lachlan kept his distance, which annoyed me. I wanted him to come over and win me back. He should fight for me. Can’t he see Ethan and I aren’t hanging together?

Harriet grabbed my hand. “Come on. Let’s dance.”

I followed my sister onto the dance floor, and swinging my arms in the air, I tripped off into my own little tipsy universe. It felt nice. The space was loved, and everyone was having a ball.

As I swayed, I felt the presence of someone behind me. I turned, and Lachlan was smiling and dancing close to me. Just as my heart skipped along and a smile touched my lips, a gorgeous brunette, one of the models, joined him. Talk about falling from a great height. My heart sank, and I left Harriet to dance alone.

I stepped out into the alleyway, found a quiet little corner away from the smokers, and looked up at the stars. Tears made everything appear blurry. I ached for Lachlan. The pain was unbearable, especially seeing that pretty girl dancing so close to him. And just to punish myself even further, I imagined him ravaging her.

Just as I was about to go to my car and cry my eyes out, I heard, “Where are you going?”

The man who had stolen my everything stood there.

“Oh. Um…” My brain had melted at his sight.

He took my hand.

“Why aren’t you in there with that girl, dancing?” I asked.

He tilted his head. “Are you jealous?”

I looked down at the ground. “Stop turning this into a game. I’m not as shallow as you. I can’t just act like nothing happened between us.”

“I’m not shallow. I’m just good at hiding my feelings.”

I gazed up at him. His eyes had gone dark and as I burrowed deep, I could see his recent struggles.

“I know you’re not shallow. I wouldn’t like you if you were.”

“Oh, you still like me.” His grin dimpled his cheeks.

I wanted to slap his handsome face. “Stop playing games, Lachlan. You know I do.”

“No, I don’t.” He’d turned serious again. “Last time I saw you, you were with Ethan. That fucking hurt. Let me tell you.” His stare penetrated to my core, making me gulp.

“I was never with him. We didn’t do anything. I mean, he kissed me.”

He stepped closer. “That pisses me off.” He ran his thumb over my lips. “These are my lips. I want those lips for me only.”

I had to smile at how preposterous that sounded, but it was nice too. “How do you think I felt, knowing you were probably sleeping with Britney? I know how forceful she can be.” I raised an eyebrow.

“She didn’t come near me. The marriage has been annulled because she’d followed in my father’s footsteps. They deserved each other.” He let out a tense breath. “It’s been an eventful month. And fucking lonely without you. I’ve missed you.”

Tears burned my eyes. “I need a tissue. I have to go inside,” I said, though I wavered because I didn’t want to kill the moment.

Our eyes locked again, and I remained stuck there on the spot.

He ripped his T-shirt and handed it to me. “Here.”

“You’ve just ruined your shirt.” I took it anyhow and wiped my nose.

Lachlan shrugged. “I don’t care. I only care about you. I want to stare into your beautiful eyes and see that fragile look you get when I’m deep inside of you. Making me want to smother you. Love you. Hold you.”

My knees gave way, and I fell into his strong arms.
