LACHLAN

Miranda stared at me. “You’re abducting me?”

Her shocked disbelief made me chuckle. “That, I am.”

“Why?”

“Because I’m greedy. I want you all to myself.”

“Where are we going?”

“It’s a surprise,” I said, turning to indulge in her pretty face.

“But this is the desert. It’s kind of creepy out here in that No Country for Old Men way,” she said. “What if we break down? Or run out of gas?”

I laughed. “You’ve always had an overactive imagination. That’s why we’re using the SUV. The tank’s full.” She kept staring at me as though I was a weirdo. “Are you scared I’ll stop the car and take advantage of you?”

She laughed. “You’ve already done that once tonight.”

“You struck me as a willing participant.” I raised my eyebrows. “Going on how wet and screechy you got.”

“Screechy?”

I laughed. It had been an interesting evening. And it was eleven o’clock at night, and we were an hour away from Las Vegas.

I’d carried Miranda to my car as she giggled and hit me at the same time, telling me to put her down. By the time we fell into the back seat of my car, my lips and every other part of me had touched every part of her.

“You’re not cold, are you?”

“No. But I’m bit breezy down there,” she said, tilting her head downward. She crossed her legs and clutched her arms.

“I’m sorry. Those panties were just in the way.”

A diner’s bright lights shone from up ahead. “Let’s stop. I could use a coffee and a bite to eat. Is that okay?”

“Oh god yeah. I’m starving. Only I’m not wearing any panties.”

“Now why did you have to say that?” I pulled up in front of the weathered old diner, which seemed to be wearing its original coat of paint, then I leaned in and kissed her warm, soft lips.

“I guess we should go in and eat,” she said, unravelling from my arms.

I jumped out of the car and ran to her side to open the door. “Madam, after you.”

She laughed at my silly British accent.

“Are we going to Las Vegas?” she asked as though it had finally dawned on her.

“We are.” I wrapped my arm around her waist and drew her close.

“Then why didn’t you just tell me? We could have stopped at my place for some clothes and underwear.”

“Because I’m impatient to get there.” I also had other motives, but I kept them to myself.

“But Las Vegas?”

I laughed at her shocked expression. “Why not? It’s as far away from our lives as I can think of without having to fly.”
