She touched her dress. “I’m not dressed for that place.”

“You look perfect. All kinds of people go to Vegas. There’s no specific dress code.” I played with her hand. “In any case, we can go shopping and buy you clothes, underwear, whatever your sweet heart desires. As long as you’re with me. And when we’re alone, we won’t need clothes, will we?”

Miranda smiled.

“I could murder a burger,” I said as we entered the diner.

The bright lights and gaudy colors made my eyes hurt. But then the unmistakable aroma of grease made my tummy plead for an assault of artery-clogging food.

We slid into a wooden booth with faded, torn padding and ordered burgers, fries, and coffee.

When the food arrived, we ate as though it were our first meal in days.

“Are you going to tell me what happened to your marriage with Britney? It seems implausible that she just allowed the annulment to go ahead.”

“Let’s just say that the dirty game she’d played to win backfired.”

Miranda placed a fry in her mouth and cast me a questioning frown.

“She fucked Orlando when he was underage.”

Her eyebrows shot up. “Shit. And he didn’t want it?”

“She cajoled him with that big mouth of hers.”

Rolling her eyes, Miranda shook her head. “Are all men and boys beholden to their dicks?”

I shrugged. “Young men can be a horny bunch.” I kept it short and sweet and hoped she wouldn’t ask about my, at times, regrettable history of excess.

At exactly midnight, we arrived in Vegas. It wasn’t hard to find a place to stay, and within half an hour, we were in bed, naked, and Miranda was tucked in my arms.

The last thing I remembered before falling asleep was whispering, “I love you,” and feeling at peace with the world at last.

The next day, we ended up having a hell of a fun time. We played the machines and I entered a poker game and actually won, but then I lost it all at blackjack.

Miranda looked beautiful in a red velvet dress that she’d bought. I was more excited by what lay beneath that pretty outfit. We’d visited a sexy lingerie store.

In many ways, the trip was like a honeymoon, despite that we weren’t married. But I did have a plan.

After dinner and a few drinks, I said, “I want to take you somewhere special. It’s the main reason why I brought you here.”

Her brow creased. “So you did have an ulterior motive?”

“Ulterior? My god, Miranda, you’ve got a suspicious mind. Is it just me?”

“I’m like that with everyone,” she said. “I get it from my mom.”

“Why haven’t I met your parents yet?”

She shrugged. “I don’t know. We’ve been together for nearly six months. Let’s wait and see.”

“Wait and see?” I asked. “You don’t have faith in us?”

“Well, after everything that’s happened…” She twirled a strand of hair, drawing my attention to her milky cleavage.

“I never stopped thinking about you or wanting you.” I held her hand. “And now I need you to come with me.”

“Where are we going?”
