“She’s older?” I asked.

“Only by five years. Miles is nineteen going on forty.” She giggled. “It’s not that. It’s just that she’s got boys going after her from every direction. Have you seen her?”

“She’s stunning. She looks like her dad with her blue eyes and long, fair hair,” I said. I didn’t have the heart to tell Juniper that I’d spied Allegra flirting with Miles too. “Miles is pretty gorgeous too. Not that I’m interested.” I smiled shyly.

She tilted her head. “Lachie looks so happy. You look great together. He’s had a shit time. His father’s unwell. And that Tammy… ick.” She pulled a face.

“Yeah. Tell me about it.” I sighed. “And there’s Britney too.”

“Britney’s not to be trusted around men, married or not. Be careful around her.”

“What do you know?” I asked.

“Not much. Only that she’s never gotten over Lachlan. But he’s crazy about you. I can see it. We all can. He’s so much more grounded.”

I should have been buoyed by Juni’s encouraging comments, but instead my head exploded with thoughts of Britney and Lachlan. She’d made no secret of her designs on him. But it still plagued me that Lachlan hadn’t mentioned he’d actually slept with her.

After a while, we left the store, carrying our shopping bags. Instead of feeling high from scoring a gorgeous new dress to wear, I had a knot in my gut.

“Listen, Andie, don’t go all glum. If Lachlan were going to marry Britney, he would’ve by now,” Harriet said, reading my mind. “And he’s crazy about you.”

My sister knocked some sense into me, and instead of allowing Lachlan’s sexual history to eat away at me, I took her by the arm and sprang along. “I can’t wait to wear my new dress.”
