LACHLAN

I ended the call. Miranda was lounging on the sofa, her lustrous hair hanging over the edge.

“They’ve managed to salvage three pieces.”

Miranda set her book down. “That’s something.”

“Florian’s being extradited as we speak.” I sighed.

“You don’t seem happy about that.”

I shrugged. “It’s just having to deal with the cops and press charges and the mess that comes with that.”

“Doesn’t that mean you’ll now be debt-free and in the clear?”

“I’ve been debt-free for a while. The de Koonings saw to that. And a suspiciously acquired Degas helped set up the Grenadine development.”

“What happened to that project?”

“Britney plans to finish it when she can find the money.”

“By marrying you?”

It felt as if she’d dunked my head in a bucket of water. “What?”

“She’s made no secret of it. She told me straight out and even suggested you needed her.”

“That’s bullshit.” I headed over to the fridge and grabbed a beer. “Do you want one?” I held the bottle up.

Miranda shook her head and adjusted on the sofa, allowing me to cop an eyeful of her pussy and lose my train of thought. She pulled down my dinosaur print T-shirt and rose.

“Hey. I was enjoying that,” I said.

Miranda smiled and stood before the scrawled art I’d bought at the charity auction. “Are you sure you want me to have this?”

“You bet. It’s significant, from our first-ever date.”

“Fake date, you mean.” She grinned.

“It might have been fake, but it’s still significant for me.”

“And me,” she replied with a dreamy smile. “I’ll hang it in my office. That is if I can afford to insure it first.”

“I’ll pay for it to be insured. Along with the Condor.”

She turned sharply. “The Condor? You haven’t had that insured yet?”

Sucking in a breath, I shook my head. “It must seem as though I don’t have a clue. But it’s been a hell of a few months.”

Miranda’s dark eyes shone with sympathy. “I can help.”

“I’ll arrange it when speaking with the insurers about the Pollocks.”

“Are you going to keep the Pollocks?”

“Maybe. Tammy’s credit card bills are huge.”
