“Then it’s all arranged.”

“Ollie wants to perform?” I asked.

“He does. When I visited him earlier, he looked so much better. And he’s moving his legs, thanks to your sister’s good work. She’s a star in that household.”

Harriet watched me keenly, trying to guess the conversation. I stuck my tongue out at her and made her smile.

“Okay. I can drop Ava off. It’s still only six. As long as Sherry doesn’t mind.”

“She’ll be fine.”

“You sound happy. Has something happened?”

“You bet. I’m free, and I’m in love with the sexiest and smartest girl in town.”

“Oh? Anyone I know?” My huge smile almost hurt.

“You know her better than most, I believe.”

“I’ll drop Ava off now, then. And I’m sure Harry will be keen to go.”

“Great. Catch you soon.” He kissed into the phone.

“Back at you,” I said.

I ended the call and wondered what had happened, because he sounded like a different person from the one I’d encountered earlier.

When I told Harriet of the plans and asked if she wanted to come, she replied, “You bet. Did he really ask for me?” Her face brightened, and she gave a huge smile.

“He did.”

“He needs me to be there to help him and to cheer him on,” she said, racing out of my bedroom, I assumed to look for a suitable outfit.

I headed into Ava’s room, and when I told her she was off to Malibu, she jumped up and down. For Ava, that house was like a fairy palace. I felt the same. That place had magic woven into its walls—wicked witches and all. But as long as Lachlan remained my knight in shining armor, protecting me from fire-breathing dragons like Tamara and Britney, that sprawling estate would continue to charm.
